Hey all,
Wondering how many rds (loose) and loaded mags do soldiers around the world carries with them on patrol, combat, etc...

Canada was five 30rd mags when I was in (mid 90's) standard (150 rds), but not uncommon to have another 60 - 120 rounds in packaging in your butt pack. That's if you're a rifleman. Machinegunners obviously more.

10 Bombed up 30rd Mags (300rds), Then I had 120rds on stripper clips. 2 X 13rd 9mm Mags... Then whatever explosives..... 40mm, C13 Frags...

The new doctrine is a minimum of 10 magazines loaded with extras carried in thevehicles or packs of the soldiers. The 5 mag so called "combat load" is finally dying a well deserved death.

As the age old saying goes...

The only time you can have "too much" ammo is when you are treading water.

1 in the gun, 8 in the front, two in the back and 6 in the pack.

In Afghanistan I carried 10 rifle mags, 2 pistol mags, 3 frag grenades, 2 smoke grenades, and a couple of times I had an M72.

My grandfather said that in WW2 when he got conscripted into the Red Army, he got a box of 15rds, no rifle. He was in the third wave of the attack. He was told to run behind the main attack and pick up a rifle from one of the dead soldiers in the 1st or 2nd wave. Fifteen round battle load - easy to carry. Guess then didn't expect you to get off more than 15rds before you bought the farm.:(

How did you find the Romanians?

Depended on who I was working with. Some were better than others. I took them on a case by case basis. This pic was taken after one of their APCs hit a mine. Their platoon commander was very switched on and handled the situation superbly.

In some 3rd world countries, 5 to 10 rounds max to prevent all too frequent coups.

I carried 14 loaded mags, 3 Frags,2 smoke grenades, 1 belt of 7.62mm link for the GPMG (all members of the Platoon carried one) plus other items such as IR Strobe,IFAK,map ,compass,GPS,extra dressings and packing material
the others carried what their job required be it drums of 5.56mm linked ammo,M203 rounds (18 per M203 ) M72 ,etc.
A oic of the guys since everyone else is posting pics :)

Lots of chest rigs. Good to see that there are more guys out there who feel that the tacvest is a waste of tax payer's money.

Speaking as someone who has run out of ammo in a gunfight.....

I can tell you that it is NOT a good feeling.....

Anger, Fear and Rage all coming together........with Terror......

Man that stuff must get HEAVY!

My best friend is coming back from Afghanistan in a week. He's a machine gunner there and he says that in addition to a ####load of ammo he has to carry extra barrels for the C6. 100+ pounds worth of gear is not uncommon. Imagine carrying that in the blistering heat through a butthole like Afghanistan while keeping a vigilant eye out for little f@ckers in the hills squeezing off sporadic bursts of AK fire?

I can only imagine how stressful and tiring that must be... Respect!

I agree. I support the troops 100% and I think what they do really does matter!
