The article says there were less than 4000 as of 2007 - before Norinco came on the scene with sub-$1000 rifles.

How many are (registered) AR's are there just on CGN?

Do you have an AR registered to your name, and if so how many?

Gah, should have been 1-3, 4-10, and 10+

No - Zero was a good option. I do NOT like the AR, and would never buy one. I do, however, own another flavour of 'black rifle'... But it is non-restricted.

I do not have an AR, I am thinking of a Norinco for my first. I understand that it is not mil-spec but is it accurate and okay for some simple out of the box shooting?

Many people use and really like them.... They are inexpensive and they work.

The three I have work great.

Out of the box, you mostly get everything you need (except a good sling) and IMO, the closest thing you can get to a semi-auto M4 without having to spend over $1000.

The top rail, as far as I know, accepts anything you can put on a picattiny rail.

For under $20, this handguard mounted rail lets you mount everything you need to make you an ubber mall ninja.

The buffer tube accepts pretty much any sling mount you can put on any AR.

Reliability and accuracy I'd say are as good as the operator.

If you like spending money, maybe the Nork's not for you. (Nothing wrong with that, either).

If you like great value, I'd say it is.

Own one. Seriously thinking of building my second. Can potentially see the slight possibility of building a third if first build goes well. Yet, I cannot fathom why anyone would have anymore than that? Don't get me wrong, they're great but personally I would diversify.

That said every CGNr should own at least one B/G rifle;);)
