How many rounds before cool down?

I'm sure some mathematician could calculate how much is too much. Based on the grain of bullet, amount of energy produced, how much heat is produced from the energy, then figure out what the stess point of the barrel is etc, etc..

Unfortunately for you, i'm not a mathematician :D and I don't think you'll find one here. I'm sure it's a pretty high number though.

They don't call them Fire-arms for nothing.I quit smoking but my SKS still smokes, and the rule is to stop shooting before it actually catches fire, after about a 1000 rnds. fired in a short time. These old rifles are tough as Sewer rats and thrive on abuse.Give her hell ,and if it burns out, buy another.

Are you sure it was the handguard and not just lube/oil burning off?
No, you're right it was probably the ingrained oils burning off, but still, it was something to behold.

Did they make such dramatic advances in metallurgy since the fifties that ordnance steel now takes longer to heat up and less time to cool down? This is my first centre-fire rifle so I don't know if modern rifles heat up quite so much...

I went to the range with my SKS, I took 120 rounds with me. I started shooting and after maybe 20 round the barrel got very hot. I know the rule of thumb is to take your hand and if you can not hold it on the barrel for more then ten seconds, its too hot and should be left to cool. After 20-30 rounds, the barrel is too hot to hold for 2 seconds, let alone 10 My question is, how many rounds do you usually shoot before cool down? what are the risk of changing the tempering of the steel if it get too hot?

Dont worry about overheating. I have beat up Tula sks 55/56? non matching and i think was never really refurbished. I by it 14 years ago from century at montreal. I shoot it with no forgiveness 150-250 rounds at each trip at the range. Decent shooter too. The rifle cool when i get back home! You will never wear out an sks or almost....:D

With the barrel vibration after firing 100-120 rds in rapid fire mode, are your groups smaller than 1 minute of T-34 tank? That always controls my shooting the SKS, unless I'm shooting it in a match.

I had the barrel of my SKS so hot once that when I grazed it with the back of my thumb whilst reloading, it instantly burned me - like badly. Liquified my skin.

Hurt like a sunova##### let me tell you. I kept shooting a little while longer of course - I still had targets standing and leaving them untouched was unacceptable.

First time I read this I thought "Good one", but I was at the range today and the wood around the handguard started smoking after only 60 rounds. That's ridiculous! And it took a helluva long time to cool down, I didn't want to stick it in the case too soon for fear it would melt the foam padding, hehe.

I've got a case custom made for my AK,, smelled funny on the drive home!!! Still hot after 30 min drive, foam didn't stick to the gun tho
