Not sure about handguns. never worn one out.

But I have worn out many rifle barrels. Depending on caliber, they last 1000 to 5000 rounds. Stainless last longer than blue.

This is not such an easy question to answer.

Long story short, the energy of the round, the materials involved and the method and quality of manufacture all play very large roles in barrel life.

These numbers are mostly true for combat firearms.

Handguns will retain accuracy pretty well, for quite a long time, but you may find accuracy degrading sooner due to other parts wearing out, depending on the quality of the gun. A Match Rifle with a barrel burning cartridge may last less than 1000 top-performing rounds.

You'll wear other small parts out long before the barrel craps the bed.

All depends on barrel quality and if its hammer forged, but its around 25,000rds or so depending.

5000-10,000rds is not barrel life but routine maintenance schedule for service guns (springs and high wear parts replacment)

About rifles, though centerfire rifles wear down faster, it is notworthy to mention that .22lr rifle barrels almost never wear out. That is if not damaged by improper cleaning methods. I have heard stories of accuracy being retained for barrels having 200000 and even 500000 round count.

the wear happens in the throat due to the abrasive effect of the burning powder (airguns of the same caliber don't do that)
it all depends on the amount of powder in the case.
for example, all other things equal, a 30-06 will last less than a 308win but more than a 300win mag

And on top of what has been said already : also depending on your bullet material : Lead bullets with no jackets won't wear a barrel out,they last forever, with jacketed bullets, it strongly depends on speed,Jacket material/thickness and friction surface.

6.5-284 can be cooked in 600 rounds if they are hot rounds. 22-250 can be cooked in 500 rounds if they are hot. 308 can go 5000 rounds and still be accurate.
