How many rounds does it take to shoot out a modern pistol

If the firearm is cleaned and oiled correctly and often that will make a huge difference.

I clean my glock17 almost every time after shooting and getting around 3000 rounds - bore is like a mirror, you couldn't tell it was ever shot.
 
They try to change the barrel on my 5946 every few years and I tell them to leave it alone as it is a fricken tack driver the way it sits; besides, I don't shoot it nearly as much as I did perhaps 15 years ago. Back then it would see THOUSANDS of rounds between barrel changes and refurbishing, but it never lost a bit of accuracy and the rifling looked great in it. It is going to kill me to hand that thing in someday - not that I love the 5946, but after a gun has ridden on your hip for so many years ....
