how many Rounds

I carry lots, a box of 50 (reloads) on me, a box in the truck and another at camp.
It doesn't weigh that much and won't do me any good sitting at home.

I know, it is more ammunition than I have shot in total in the last 35 years of hunting but I'd rather be looking at it than looking for it.

Dan

You carry 50 on you while you hunt? In those plastic box?

2 mags., so 8 rnds. total. Never used the 2nd mag., but emptied the first on a long track like Longwalker. Granted I was determined that the deer wasn't going to hop up and run away again (doubled the track time) so the last 2 shots were the double-tap headshot at about 25 ft. Good 'ol mod. 7600.

Also have at least a box back at camp/vehicle for possible target shooting.

I carry the 4 or in the rifle, then a soft quiet belt pack that holds 14 and sometimes one in each empty pocket. I've never shot a deer more than twice, but if I fall off a log and break my knee or something, I want help sooner than dark when I don't make it back...up at hunting camp the whole valley would come looking for a couple sets of sos shots.

10 hunting rounds. 5 in rifle and 5 in a stripper clip.

Also another clip with cheap FMJ for signalling. Our camp has am agreed signal of 3 shots exactly 10 seconds apart to mean "dome here to help".

Ever since I got lost and had to bed down for the night, I carry the signal rounds as tracers, if possible, so I can be spotted better than just sound.

lol So that's how you got the name long walker.

That's one way to interpret it. I do like to walk a lot. Another explanation is the 800 km pilgrimage my wife and I did in Spain a few years ago, backpacking on the Way of St James - el Camino de Santiago. Everything on your back, sleeping in whatever village the evening finds you in. A wonderful month long experience. But that's another story.

When in camp, I've usually got my 50 round, or so, box of reloads, and no more than 10 to 15 on my person. 4 or 5 in the magazine, 5 in the soft side belt pouch, and maybe another few mouse phart loads for grouse. There might be a few more in my backpack, but that doesn't always go with me. Sometimes it might stay at the trailhead waiting for my return.

I carry the extra 50 or so rounds, and swap "fresh" ammo for "stale" ammo. The "stale" ammo gets used for a range day, or saved for practice for next year.

If I'm out for a long walk, I fill the rifle and take an extra Mag, or a few extra rounds, depending on the type of rifle I have.
If I'm going in to the camp away from roads and vehicle, I take two rifles, and 20 rounds for each. One light rifle for walking, and a heavier one for the stand.

If I'm walking without a pack, whatever the rifle holds plus about that many loose in my pocket (Usually works out to 8-10 total). The box they came from stays in my pack which is either in the car or camp(20 round box). I have never done a week long hunt but if I did, I would probably bring another box to sit in the tent. I've never used more than a few shots on an outing but it's comforting to have them. A .270win worth of powder can spark up an emergency fire pretty quick and there are stories of people dumping multiple magazines into an animal in less than ideal situations.

3 or 4 in the rifle, and an ammo pouch on my belt with about 7-10 more. On a backpack hunt I'll have another 10 in the pack. In my truck I will usually have lots of ammo. It's a truck, so why not?

I have one of those leather cheekpad gadgets off of ebay for around $30. it holds half a dozen rounds. That plus a full mag and I'm good for anything. the seller is maks11000 always had good service, even with custom configurations. here's a screen shot.

My .300WM holds 4 rounds. I carry 4 rounds in each of the main pockets of my hunting jacket and bibs for a total of 16 rounds. That way, no matter what pocket I reach into I am pulling out ammo instead of a lighter, chapstick or chocolate bar in the heat of the moment. Plus another 20 rounds in a box in my backpack to top up my pockets if need be.

Belts should be the way to go. Better to have way more than not enough. ;)

I have 2 mags of 4 plus a ammo wallet that holds 10, that I take with me anytime I'm out hunting. For extended trips I will have a box of 20 back at camp, I also carry a flare hit with bear bangers that can be used for signaling if necessary.

I hunt with a M305. I carry 40 rounds on stripper clips in different pockets and pouches, and 2 mags. 6 clips are loaded with SP ammo and 2 are loaded with ball ammo. One can never be too careful. My old man almost died on a hunting - canoe trip when him and his friend flipped a canoe on a flooded river. All their ammo was in packs that sunk, so they had rifles with no ammo.... They had visits from black bears on a few nights they were wrapped up in a tarp trying to stay warm, and sticks sharpened in to spears on rocks for defence... I`ll always have ammo on me if things go south on a hunting trip. They were lost for 12 days with the police, MNR and CF looking for them in Central Ontario. That was the only time I saw my mother cry about my old man. I won`t ever wind up like he did, if I can help it.
