Me and my brother are new to hunting and are planning on heading out to northern ontario for Deer in the coming season.
I had a question come up that I thought everyone here would have an opinion on.

How much ammunition do you bring with you on an average deer hunt? I have no idea if 20 is too much or too little (Assuming my gun is sighted in already, and set to go). What is your opinion on it?

Thanks in advance!

Pack some extra ammo....I always have 10 in my fanny pack. If you've never had a disaster happen where you needed more ammo...your turn just hasn't come yet.

I usually carry 10 out into the bush, but always take at least 50 on a trip. The way I figure it I can lose every round I take into the bush every day and still have more (Always plan for the worst case)

last magazine, packs, cartridges,... other guys who have lost thiers and have then used my rifle, or I gave them cartridges... a lot can happen on a trip..
I go out with 10 and have 40 packed just in case

I carry eight in a plastic sleeve in my pocket to load my rifle and have a couple for backup. Then I have 12 in a belt pouch that folds open to expose them in elastic holders. I figure that's plenty to take out a coyote or target of opportunity or two and still have enough to spare. I also keep a knife, flashlight, compass and fire starter on the same belt that goes with me everywhere when I'm hunting just in case I leave my knapsack while I'm in a hurry to track something or I want to go for a little wander around.

Better to pack too much and bring it back home, than to run out of ammo. I run with 4 in the magazine, 9 in one of those buttstock ammo sleeves, and another 5 in a pocket. On a good hunt I use one cartridge, and on a bad hunt I'll use two or three.

I usually carry a rifle full, plus enough to fill it twice. In most of my rifles thats 12, with 4 in the gun and 4 each in each of both front pants pocket. At times, especially when 2 types of ammo are being carried I'll use a folding belt pouch most of which hold a dozen. Camp or the truck will have whatever is left of a 50 box, which will be somewhere between 50 minus the 12 I'm carrying and maybe twenty on the low side.

I carry 12 on me ( superstition ) including what's in the gun. If I were a long way from home I'd keep an extra box of 20 in camp or in the truck in case I need to rezero, or something unforeseen comes up.
