How Many Rounds?

I always take more than I will ever need. A bump on the scope can really dig deep into a limited bullet inventory.

I will add, that when I leave on a hunting trip, I have two rifles with me. If a scope or a rifle is somehow damaged, I simply take the backup rifle and continue hunting. As such, I don't bother taking more that 20 rounds for each rifle.

I was with a "buddy" once and we both had muley tags. He saw it first so his was the shot. We walk down the tree line until he has a clear shot with a rest of a tree. He shoots, misses. Shoots again and hits it but it's still standing. He looks at me and says "I don't have any more shells". I end up killing it. Maybe it's just me, but who walks away with only two rounds. I don't know the magic number of rounds to take. I load my rifle and always have more in my pocket. I've been known to miss a time or two so I've always probably carried more than I need.

The more you use practicing, the less you will use afield. Or something like that.

I bring 2 boxes for each rifle I bring up. I always have enough to fill the mag twice while I am hunting. You never know if you get turned around, its nice to have a few for signal shots, or for red squirrel defence. :)

I usually bring along a box of 20 on a trip to drive-in areas, 40 on fly in or remote spots. Carry a dozen in farming country, 20 in the deep bush.
One memorable deer hunt in a wilderness area actually required 14 shots to kill a deer. It was a very unusual situation, don't expect to ever repeat that. Most times it takes one shot. But I like to carry more for re-sighting, emergency signalling, possible varmint or small game shooting, etc.
I just returned from a safari in South africa. 7 head of plains game with 7 shots, and then there was the Eland. Well, the Eland required 8. Dang.

When things go bad, they go real bad.

Ain't that the truth...

Myself, I seldom go very far without 4 or 5 in the rifle, another half dozen in a buttstock ammo pouch, and another 10 rounds stashed in my daypack. You just never know. While I've never ended up running dry, I've come close. Burned up 3 rounds one morning on 2 deer, and then spent several hours chasing one a buddy shot and burned up 9 or 10 rounds trying to finish it with stupidly long running shots or fleeting glimpses in thick bush. We recovered it in the end after a very long day, but we certainly did it the hard way.
