How many shells allowed

I have to ask, I know when hunting water birds, one is allowed only 3 shells,but what is allowed for other birds and four legged animals? Is it more, or only three shells also? Send me a message.For Ontario.

Its different province to province. I can hunt rabbit all year round in alberta and there is no limit on the round capacity for my shotgun in that case.

But if im hunting birds its 3 shells max so id have to plug my shotgun.

As well i can just take a shotgun for protection in alberta with whatever amount of ammo it holds.

In newfoundland for example i cant do that, i need a hunting licence of some sort, a reason to have the shotgun with me, protection doesnt cut it there.
 
In Ontario, when using a shotgun you're only allowed 3, 2 in the magazine and one in the chamber for hunting anything!

For rifles, the only restriction is the federal one on magazine capacity.

Pretty sure that is not true, I'm not a hunter but I thought the 3 only counted for migratory birds. You could have more for deer,rabbits etc.

I am pretty sure it is true...........but go ahead and take your plug out and let us know how you make out
 
In Ontario a shotgun can only hold a maximum of 3 rounds in total. No matter what you are hunting. I was on Pelee Island last week hunting pheasants, the CO's stopped and checked us, and one of the items he checked for was to see if my 20 ga pump was properly plugged. It was, we were both happy.
 
I know in BC the rules

Migitory birds Federal domain so its 3..

For other birds its 5 now if you load slugs for say deer its no limit just on shot...
 
From the Ontario hungting regulations, page 23 of the 2012 version:

"You must plug a semi-automatic or repeating shotgun so that it will not hold more than a total of three shells in the chamber and magazine combined"
 
Best keep it plugged. I've read that in the provincial regs as well.

This is my first hunting season and all, but I'm pretty sure by the time you got to the fourth round whatever you're shooting at isn't going to be hanging around.

I had to modify an older bolt action 410 so that the owner complied with the regs.

From Page 17 of the 2012-2014 BC hunting synopsis under legal hunting methods

4 It is unlawful to hunt with a set gun, or to hunt wildlife with a pump,
repeating or auto-loading shotgun with a magazine capable of holding
more than two shells.
Where the use of a shotgun is allowed for
hunting or trapping big game, an unplugged shotgun holding more than
2 shells and firing single projectiles only (slugs) may be used.
 
Maybe it is time for another regulation read. I pulled the plug on the 12 gauge pump as it is strictly for bear defence and is loaded with slugs.
