I have looked for one of these for many many years, and a friend at club had this one, that he had really never shot it, he let me shoot it and the deal was done. Paid big money but won't loose any sleep over it, I love this rifle
I cleaned it up and good friend ulta sound cleaned the trigger, the whole gun is as close to original condition I have ever bought, bluing 99%, wood has a couple small marks and there is no bedding been done,
I called Remington gave serial # gun was built in 1956 first one built in 1955,the pre-runner to the 700 40x which came out in 1963 in the 40x rimefire

Specs Barrel 28"
has 2 screws at front of forearm to tune barrel, has metal on forarm to put a hand stop, has Redfield International sights front and rear.
I put a 20 moa rail EGW and mounted a B&L 24x fine cross hairs and 1/8 dot with 1/8 min adjustments.
I can truly say that this gun with a old lot of Eley 10x can shoot better than I can shoot it, did manage 4 shots out of 5 under .110 yeah blew the last shot, nut behind bolt got loose.I will try and post targets later. If you ever get a chance to buy one of these old 40x Rem don,t pass it-up, they say the Anshutz are the best there is but
I think this rig will run with any rimefire.with the right person shooting it Like Eagleye

Would like to hear of anyone else shooting a 40x and there thoughts on these old Remingtons

Nice rifle manitou. It is flattering for Eagleye that you hold him in such high esteem, but why should you not be the one to be able to extract top performance from the rifle ? Just keep shooting those groups in the .1s and no one should be able to do better.
I love my rifle and have the promise of another. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's match 100yds - 80 shots for score, unlimited sighters. Should be a great day !!

hi paul
i know you have a fondness in your heart for your 40x,i just thought i would tease you with mine.comes from the factory with a 2oz jewel trigger and the mcmillan stock, scope is a 6.5x20 leupold and just in case you are wondering if it shoots well the answer is yes.maybe one day we should sit down beside one another and do some friendly shooting??

Hey bulldog did that 40x come from the custom shop at Remington with stainless barrel & stock or is it aftermarket you built. looks great.
Tell you what Bulldog it going to be 17deg you go out tomorrow and fire 3 groups at 50 and 3 at 100y and will see if the old 1956 40x can even be close to your custom.
and 3 shots don,t count 5 is the number.

The gloves have hit the ice!

Nice score to both of you.

First of all, Very nice score Paul. Thanks for the vote of confidence, but you will shortly have that one singing your tune, I'm sure!!) My 40X is based on the 700 Series rifles, but otherwise is a similar item. These rifles have a lot of potential. Fed the right ammo, they will keep the competition on it's toes. Heres typical 5-shot groups at 50M from mine. Eagleye.

I am currently looking for one of these at a decent price :)

TRX Let me know what you consider a decent price as I have been looking for a nice one for 30 years and have seen a few and have a real good idea what you would have to pay for one. in very good to excellent condition.??

I was thinking around the 1000 range. Preferably a little less if at all possible but I dont think it is. Also the factory sights arent really needed for me.

Let me know if Im nuts.

Thanks

Dave fellow at range said that the Remington couldn,t hold a candle to a 54 anshutz, ??
there is a couple guys shooting 52 winchesters pretty good but they don,t shoot any better than my 540 remington both about the same.
this 40x will shoot tighter than the 540 rem
