Just wondering how many shots are typically fired in formal trap & skeet shooting? I've been told that it's single shot only. Is it not acceptable to fire a second follow-up shot if you miss the first?

each target is only shot at once in a typical round of trap or skeet (there may be specialized courses of fire that allow more). there is a total of 25 targets per round.

One shot per target on ATA trap and NSSA and International skeet. 25 targets per round (50 for doubles trap). Always have a few extra shells in the event a target needs to be reshot.

International trap, wobble trap, helice (zz birds) and in some situations sporting clays permit a second shot on a single target.

With skeet, each station offers two single shots from the high and the low house. And 4 of the 8 stations offer doubles. You reshoot your first miss. 25 targets per round.

What do you mean by "reshot", if it's a single shot/one shot per target game?
Occasionally in trap a bird will leave the house broken and is considered "no target." If it is shot at inadvertently then it must be reshot.

In skeet sometimes one shot will break both birds on a pair and the pair needs to be reshot.

Extra ammo is a good idea if you drop a shell on the ground while loading. When that happens, leave it on the ground and grab another shell. Helps keep the pace going on a trap round.
