Just picked up a Bubba sporter with a Monty Carlo butt stock.
I'd like to replace it with a proper one but understand there are different sizes. Do they all fit the wrist piece??

It's a 1929 Ishapore SHTLE III
What would be the proper sized one for this era?
Thanks

Standard butts for the Number 1 were Short, Normal, Long, with Bantam introduced partway through the Great War.

Number 4 Rifle used Bantam, Short, Normal, Long, Extra-Long and Extra-Extra-Long.

Reasons? Welshmen tended to be short than average English and a LOT of Welsh served in the Great War, many of them formerly miners: Lots of short guys.

Colonials tended to be better-nourished and taller than standard Englishmen, so the longer stocks were introduced for the later War.

Number 4 Rifle used ...Extra-Long and Extra-Extra-Long.
...snip...

I have been told this for years but believe that the people who say this are confused by FNC1 stocks which are marked this way.

I have never seen an actual XL or XXL No4 stock (and yes I have actively looked), and they do not appear in any of the parts lists??

Please advise...

Interesting!
So would any size stock for my 1929 Ishapore SHTLE III be "correct" then??

And then there were the Bantam battalions.

If anyone actually finds an XL length stock i will buy it.

I have seen a no4 stock marked as XL, but i'm pretty sure it was some variety of rack marking, as it was "normal" length when compared.

well I'm still unpacking from the big move last year so if I still have it, it will be in a box somewhere.... along with all the other stuff I still can't find :(

also just thinking that XL is Roman numeral 40, but why would anyone be using Roman numerals

(well perhaps smellie but only because that's what they used back in the day :) cou: )

I have seen a No4 butt stamped as XL I may still have it in my pile of bits.

I reviewed the 1946 & 1955 No4 parts lists to see if there is an "XL" stock listed, as discussed there is not.
What I did find interesting is that there is no British Bantam length stock listed, and the CGB part numbers do not have a British equivalent:

1955:

however the 1962 FNC1 parts list does show an Long & Extra Long butt stock:
