How Many Spare Mags Are 'Enough'?

Probably for the same reason some guys like to have an extra 10,000 primers on hand, a few pound of powder, a few thousands boullets... along with spare firing pin/extractor...

Because they can :)

I'm the guy with 50 mags, I'll admit, its excessive, but then again I tend to hoard lots of gun stuff. Mags are disposible. I run my AR and its mags hard. I like to have a good supply of reliable, durable mags for drills. I have a couple plate carriers that I outfit with mags. All my gear needs mags too, so instead of shuffling 10 around all my stuff, I just load them all up. I just grab something and go to the range, I hate being limited by mags.

Other pluses from lots of mags:
-same lot numbers, made the same (find some good ones)
-less reloads at the range
-lots of spares for when mags break or get worn (and they do)
-ease of outfitting all my stuff
-i never say "I wish I should have bought more"

I am only on my first AR folks, everyone here keeps telling me that once you get one you'll get another. Well, with that in mind I have parts to start putting together AR #2 soon. Then I will only have 25 mags per gun.....:)

tough talk hump

Queen66: you talk the talk, do you walk the walk??...I'd watch what you say if I were you.

sent you pm. clear this up. never said i was airborne. was how ever a soldier for many years. was trying to suggest that the fella that is fat or not to your liking, may have been something else at a differant time in his life. airborne, ranger, ect. why do i got to "watch myself"? by threatening someone over the internet shows you have balls. to bad there resting on your chin.

Hey all...new to the forums here and been reding a lot of good stuff on. I'm looking to get extra mags for my new SA 550 and noticed they're not mentioned very much on this thread.

Does anyone have any opinions on the mags for sale at Can.Ammo or Wolverine?

I've ordered two black PA66 30/5 rd. from Can.Ammo but I want to order MORE MORE MORE. Probably will go with a 10 pack but I want to know if there is there a huge difference between the PA66 (nylon), the dark tan polycarbonate and the Radel 5000 PPSU other than small price dif???

Any opinions would be great, not that anyone on this forum has strong opinions about anything!

I was gently teased the first time I went to the range with my new glock and it's 8 loaded mags.

I wonder what my fellow club members would think if I opened a duffle bag with 50.

The same thing that old classmates think when the fat, balding guy shows up to the reunion in a Porsche with 2 hot, Asian, ###ually adventurous young ladies...

"I need a better f**king job!"

People who waste their own personal time postulating on what they think he should do with his money instead should obtain a better career councilor.

If you were at my range I'd speculate that you're set for success. Like Sprint posted. Who gives a rats a$$ what others "think" of your kit.

Carry what you need, if you're an infantry-type dude, and like to shoot on your own to maintain your skills, do your srills with you full rig on and 10 mags because that is what you will be carrying overseas. If you are LE, chances are you will never have more than 3-4, even if you are ERT, so there is no point carrying 12.

As for joe-citizen, carry whatever you want, just don't be that guy with a 500 rig and stuff in every pouch just to fill it up then by lunch time on a shooting course, be stripping your gear down so that by the end of the 2 day course, you are wearing almost nothing with mags in your pockets because you are too unfit to wear a full load-out for 2 days....

Reminds me of a funny story, about 6 years ago I was at the BCRA Service Rifle match and my buddy, who is a police officer/infanrty officer and was never really exposed to the civilian shooting world, came and asked me if M203's were legal. I asked why, to which he replied that he had seen a dude with (I believe) an Israeli M203/rifleman rig. One of those that are designed to carry like 18 mags and 12 40mm grenades. this dude had a M203 on his AR and was looking the part. So my buddy asks him what he has in the pouches, dude replies 18 mags, 12 dummy M203 grenades, dummy hand grenades, every pouch full with what is 'supposed' to be in them. Quite the load-out for shooting a conventional shoot in static positions. Keep in mind this guy probably wouldn't be able to run 400m without kit. Very amusing.

Personally, I carry 6 PMags, and 5 Glock mags, this has worked well for all courses I've done. At work, we carried 3 mags (1 on the gun and 2 spares), at army, we carry 10 as a standard load, C9 dudes carry 4 boxes.

I love the response "because he can" -- doesn't make the person look like a wannabe at all. I don't care what people do/have. If you want to be "that" guy who shows up at the range with 50 mags, be prepared to be mocked by people who do the real deal for a living. I support action shooting sports but I do find it humourous listening to guys at the range talk about the virtues of one particular firearm over another or one chest rig over another - talking "shop" like they have the experience to back it up. This stuff is the very reason I am too embarassed to take my friends or family to stores like Milarm or shooting events where the local air conditioning repair guy is dressed in para military garb and talking about how one round is more effective then another at killing people. Yeah you need 50 mags because if all 10/20 mags fail you have the other 30 to back it up...

I guess that means if someone has been shooting IPSC or other for a while and they find a certain firearm/round/chest rig better than another, that doesn't qualify "experience to back it up"??? What exactly qualifies as "the real deal"?

Why make a comment like "I don't care what people do/have" and then go on a rant giving your opinion on caring about what other people do/have???

i think the real deal would be actual combat (afganistan) or equivelant (yugo, somalia, cyprus on a bad day ect).

I'd point out that all of this gun, mag and gear mania keeps Canada's firearms and firearms related businesses healthy and happy. Like stores like Dave's Surplus/Tactical, Socom Supply, P&D, ect ? Then keep buying those $2000 + tricked out AR's and those $500 tactical vests.

Don't forget, if they had to rely on LEA's and military, we'd be the UK or Australia and they're would be a lot fewer of them than there are right now.

So, real operators: cut the weekend warriors some slack.

Weekend warriors: Don't take yourselves too seriously, and everybody will get along fine.

And they all lived happily ever after.

Agree with this statement. If the mall ninja wants to be a mall ninja let him but not everyone who has 50 mags is a mall ninja. Hopefully that makes sense to everyone.

as long as it makes you happy who cares? frank sinatra once said to sammy davis jnr "why do you wear a ring on every f>cking finger?" he replied "well boss, it's theatrics, it hurts no one." same could be said, it aint my thing but it's there money.

KB77: I guess with "Spaz-foo" response, it is easy to see who the wannabe is. Like I said I frankly don't care if you have 50 mags (your money = your kit) but if you bothered to read my response you would see that I mentioned "talking shop" then referred to "killing power" and "chest rigs" - quite clearly I was referring to MILITARY/LEO. If you are an IPSC shooter and want to discuss why one firearm is better then another for the sport - knock yourself out.

Nor that I said that you were an imposter...But I can tell you this, I've seen my share of ''People falling down the stairs'' for making arrogant comments like yours.
