How Many Spare Mags Are 'Enough'?

What's the fascination with dropping expensive mags on the ground?
There is this neat bit of kit called a dump pouch.

Not everyone runs a dump pouch and not all reloads/situations afford the operator the opportunity to deposit depleted mags into said pouch. If your mags can't take a dropping, they're sh*t.

And the H&K mags hold up fine then, which makes your point mute!

Nemesys = Know him, stacked with him, know his training background, seen his skills and know what he has access to and his location and can vouch for his street cred...

Pragmatically speaking, PMAGS are fairly cheap.

They are lightweight. They are commercially available (even in Canada). And they are an improvement for employment in hard use environment. (should read 'Infantry'; where you can and will experience bigger problems than a mag dropping freely to the ground)

With these things going for them, who really gives a f**k if HK fixes their mags or not?

As the Russian saying goes, better can be the enemy of good enough.

I don't know what to say about this post....wait know I do...I think your telling a fairy tale..

I have tried this deliberately with one H&K SA80/416 magazine several times, when i first got wind of this supposed weakness, and must say I never experience this.
Hold tight to that mag, it will be worth something one day.

No one I know has had any major issues with these mags, and that is quit a few people.
That may well be the case, I don't know you from Alice. I'm just relaying my experience with the Gen 1 and Gen 3 HK mags that are currently issued with the Norwegian QRF deployed in Afghanistan. Oh and in case you're curious - those guys usually try to change out their HK 'perfection' for plastic fantastic PMags whenever possible.

Are you dropping them from a building? Because that I can believe!
I'm 6'2, and had the rifle shouldered both times that they dropped free and went to Sweet Baby Jesus. I was moving, and on concrete at the time.

You may be telling the truth, but i don't think that is true, unless your getting Korean made imitations, and even then..
They were fresh out of a new box of practice mags supplied by a military armorer

I was too busy trying to run, shoot, reload, find cover and find a new target, to do a tactical reload.

Plus the mags were free - and not mine - so why the hell would I care?

Not according to the US mil, which has already been beaten to death here. Even if HK gets their steel mags to work its a waste of time cause the sun has set on the whole steel mag question anyhow. Even if HK fixed their mag and made it the greatest steel mag ever conceived If given a choice between polymer and steel I would still choose polymer. Plus the fact that HK's mags are retardedly expensive especially when compared with the agency price on PMags which are superior.

Metal really sucks in hot and cold weather, yea is works fine in temperate conditions but try putting your hand on a mag when its -35 outside or +65. Here is a case where HK is going way out of their way to answer the question nobody is asking anymore. If they had done this 25 years ago then yes good on them but today when everyone else has moved on... Kinda like the G36, a fantastic answer to the question asked 30 years ago but fails to answer the questions asked today or really even when it was introduced.

How do you figure?? Nemesys just told you that he broke 3 HK mags. Apparently from being dropped from less than 5 feet onto concrete. Pmags don't have that issue. The fact that not everyone uses a dump pouch further reinforces the need for a magazine that can withstand repeated drops onto hard surfaces.

Again, as Sprint(and now Rauch tactical) has now pointed out. Regardless if HK mags are as reliable as Pmags. They're still expensive, heavy, and unavailable. So do tell, what is the advantage to such mags?

in his defense, they did feel and look solid just before they died....?

Nemesys,

Are HK magazines an official issue for Norwegian Armed Forces or a unit level acquisition?

If failure is systemic, does your Chain of Command allow use of personally acquired magazines?

That's what gloves are for in -35, I wouldn't have my gloves off at any time practically when it's that temperature..

It's amazing how this always turns into a hate storm towards H&K by the same individuals who are just talking out of their ass!

Your comparison of the G36 is also totally out there, that rifle helped set a lot of standards...

Also H&K mags already work fine!

I think I'm going to have to make a video one of these days to end this debate

The US DOD initial license is $2795.

Start there. ;)

Mission Scrubbed :kickInTheNuts: HAHA...

Joking...... that is a good start.

This argument between Pmag and HK....stupid.
I am sure HK makes a Nice mag... I am an HK fan. But I am not silly enough to say a $50 HK mag is the ####. 5 Pmags for the same price.

Rauch Tactical said it best. The steel mag is going bye-bye, it is old news.It might take awhile to work through the stockpile.....:)
Why use one?

Once Magpul makes enough money they will sell off the licenses and Pmags will be everywhere for under $10.

Video about what? AGAIN, even if HK mags work as reliably as Pmags(which has already been disputed by Nemesys) what about the facts that they are heavier, cost more, and are unavailable?? Can you debate these points???

This thread is fast approaching AWESOMENESS!. FYI, last Big Boy package I was on some go fast types used these mags...they ran dirty, hot and were hitting the ground hard...no dump pouches required.

That's totally crappy.

That magazine looks like it was made upside down. In fact, with that plastic thing on top you won't even be able to seat the mag properly in your gun... :stirthepot2:
