Coltfan correctly points out that there is a conflict in US/Canadian laws.

Canada will allow you to import 5000 rounds for your own use without an import permit. The US require an export permit, and they don't give them to foreigners.

Under the "The homeland security" act as a foreign alien, yes you and I are foreign aliens, you are NOT allowed to even purchase ammunition, powder or primers in the USA.
Nor is any outlet permitted to sell you any.
In any case should you get caught with any of the above you can end up being a "guest" of the Americans for some time.

I believe you can buy ammo if you have a valid hunting license for any US State...but you cannot bring it back to Canada Legally

One of the problems associated with the recent interpretations and changes to US law is what happens on the edges of the interpretation.

My brother-in-law is a US citizen, but not a US resident. US law does allow citizens to leave the country with ammo for hunting or target shooting. If he travels down once a year and comes back to Canada with his yearly ammo needs in the trunk, is he at risk? (Yes, I know there are two answers to this question, and both of them are wrong. )
