How much did they cost?

User Lee Enfield's comments about using the price of gold are interesting, and probably a factor in how economists determine money / time comparisons. However, one must take into account that although the price of gold in the last year has shot up astronomically, our prices for a "basket" of goods have not risen to the same extent (yet). This is why I feel that 2003 dollars are a more accurate representation of what it would mean to you and me.

Go to S###perstore where the price of the very cheapest pasta has gone from 88 cents (on sale) to $1.98 (on sale) in just over a year, and then try to square that with the Government figures of 3% inflation!

I'm told that London hookers started at about 2 bob back then. Tommy was getting a shilling a day plus combat pay. My grandfather was fortunate to be in the CEF: he was getting C$1 a day plus 10 cents combat pay. Problem was that the $24 a month total-disability pay (gassed twice, shot up 3 times) after the War was not enough to raise 5 kids and feed a tubercular wife.
