How much difference does a bayonet make?

My dad handed a 91/30 down to me a couple weeks ago. After scrubbing the terrible bore out I took it out to the range last week.

First pic shows how high and right it was at 50m. Not a really great group either. Second pic is at 100m, aiming at the green tape you can see just how far off the POA it was hitting. Terrible group, also. Sight set at 100m.

Took it out again today, this time with the bayonet mounted. The two pics are at 50m again. First is some copper-washed silver tip, second is Czech silver tip. Absolutely amazing difference in POI and group size. The Czech shot really well. I didn't put it on paper at 100m but had no problem with the 200m gong, even with my crap eyes.

I guess the moral of the story is, if your Mosin shoots like crap, try it with the bayonet on. I expected some difference but didn't imagine it would be this much.

Of course, YMMV. ;)

Makes sense sure enough as the bayo acts as a vibration damper for the barrel depending on the snugness of the fit, but each rifle will be different in how they
shoot with the poker attached. The sniper rifles were given a thin pad of greased felt up close to the tip of the fore end to tune barrel harmonics & that be how I
did my one. The bayonets make fer decent tent pegs though.;)

you should have taken the bayonet off after shooting those groups, and shot another group with the same ammo.

I shot the same ammo from the first time out today as well. Some sort of yellow tip copper wash. It was my baseline for the bad groups. It shot as well as the copper wash silver tip today with the bayonet on.

I didn't bring a large enough target to try that again without the bayonet.

Wow, that's quite the difference.
I was shooting the k98k yesterday.... but I doubt it would make a difference with those as the bayo doesn't touch the barrel.

I always thought the mosin nagant was test fired with bayonet on and it stayed on the rifle . Not to be removed. I don't think the Russian soldier was issued a scabbard for it.

Leather scabbard for Mosin bayo does exist but was not too common. And yea, Mosins are sighted with bayonet on. I had to re-sight both of mine.
