How much dog on my Norinco M-14S

Greetings,

Well, I finally got a proper US made flash hider for my 2007 Norc M-14S. The original one had a canted (> 10°) dovetail groove that was wrongly diagnosed as an indexing issue. Plus, now it has a bayonet lug (CHAAAAAARGE!).

Now to the point, the new castle nut set screw I have does not have a dog end as my Norc does. I'm going to remedy that on a lathe but, I'm wondering what the US specs are for the dog dimensions and the lenght on a castle nut set screw. I could just duplicate the Norc but wondered if the US Specs would fit my new flash hider better. I'm still using my Norc castle nut.

As a final note ; how tight should a front sight be on it's dovetail? I had to use a brass hammer to tap out the original one but the new one moves easly when it's screw is not tight.

Regards,

Well, since nobody chimed in I went ahead and duplicated the Norinco set screw. The dimensions on the Norc are 2,2 mm diameter and 2,0 mm lenght.

It now fits nicely on the new FH. altough it does stick out a little.

Hi Charlemagne, I'll throw in my deux sous;

Re: the castellation specs on the castle nut; I have no idea.

But I'll tell ya, as long as you're happy with how well the sight stays in place, I wouldn't fret. ..l.once torqued down, try to shift with a tap? Go shooting and see if it stays on? And as for the longer screw sticking out? Makes it easier to pry out if need be...!

I too have an M14s in need of all sorts of work, and being fairly handy I plan to keep my money/do as much as I can myself.

Interesting note re:canted front sight misdiagnosed as barrel misindexing. I figured mine is so due to the misalignment of the feed ramp.

These rifles.....f:P:2: !

I don't have my reference material in front of me at this time but the set screw for the flash suppressor castle nut is a standard full dog set screw. I think there is a seller on EvilBay that has the actual part for sale. Wait, Just dug out Machinery's Handbook and on page 1628 Table 12 they have the diomensions for a dog point set. But I don't know the size used on the suppressor. If and when I get home tonight I will look up the specs.

Thanks for the input guys,

Re Kayser Sose :

It was the front sight dovetail on the original FH that was cut at an angle thereby causing the sight to be canted > 10° to the right. It's now indexed properly.

Re The Wizard :

I think the set screw might be a 5-40, but I'm not sure. Id did fit nicely in the .125 collet on the lathe.

Thanks for the link . Did you see on the MILSPEC package '' NON STD TIP'' ? My set screw is sure longer than that but this one looks a lot the the norc.

Regards,

it's very common for the flash hider dovetail base to be canted. Often guys think they have a incorrectly indexed barrel when it is the flash hider itself. Contrary to what is commonly thought of as a major issue with chinese rifles..... I see maybe 1 or 2 out of 10 with a true index issue. As for improperly located feed ramps.... have not run into this issue as of yet. I have the specs on the dog screw for the usgi version and have been trying to get the drawing onto my photobucket and post it here but...... my "telus high speed" dial up connection is making the process extrememly painful LOL
I haven't gone and checked myself, but there are also a lot of usgi m14 drawings on milsurps.com as well.
for all you guys that have the confidence and tools to work on your rifles and make custom parts when required or desired..... Find yourself a copy of the Jerry Kuhnhaussen 30 cal service rifle manual. There is only one mistake in that book that i have found..... the barrel drawing oprod guide diameter....... but there is no other better work on this rifle than that manual.

I could be wrong but I distinctly remember a # 6 x 32 tpi will do the trick! Not sure about the length.

If you are stuck, I have drilled and tapped using the # 6 x 32. I got lucky I guess. :D

Cheers,
Barney
