how much eye relief is "enough"?

So as I plan my first rifle and scope purchase I came across the "kisses from your scope" thread. While generally I understood more eye relief to be better, I am wondering just how much is "enough". anyone care to share their opinions on the following?

For a 308, is ~3.5 inches "enough"?

Do all scope manufacturers measure eye relief the same way?

all things being equal, is more eye relief really better, and is there such a thing as too much?
 
Yes, 3.5" is enough eye relief to keep your scope away from your head, provided two things:

1. Your stock fits you well and is the proper length for you.

2. You use proper shooting technique.
 
If your head creeps up on the stock, you'll get scoped eventually. When you mount the scope to your rifle put it on the highest setting & shoulder the rifle with your eyes closed a few times. This will tell you where you will instinctively hold the gun. You can adjust from there.
 
3 to 4 fingers is good(i have never measured) . i prefer a scope with greatest range like 3.5-5 inches as opposed to a 3-3.5 eye relief. just allows faster aquisition IMHO
