How much FT/lb we need at the impact to kill a moose...??

H4831 : That's OK my friend, we usually speak french where i live (Abitibi, Quebec) VERY few english to practice, only with native (i'am lucky for that) and some american that hunt cariboo so sometime, i just don't catch the joke made to me in english...

1899 : i have added pic's, actually, it's a girl, loll (it's had to say young like that), i have 4 kid's and it's all girl, no boy's to bring in the bush (can you explain me how to do boy??). On my last pic, she is wearing a pair of Peltor electronic ear muff under her orange cap, so i can talk with her and have her small ears well protected if i shoot... She REALLY like hunt with me and my wife and i must admit that out of 9 buck, 1 is with my wife, her first ever... all i can say from this 2 shoot of 300 win mag in few milisecond delay, a LOT of stoping power and 54in rack was DOWN...

Mobeasto : .308 is just fine, my uncle, the one who teach me hunt, is using his old savage 99 scoped with a weaver 4x scope in .308 for 30+mooses, using thoses big round nose 180gr. in green remmy box, nothing fancy here... he NEVER loose one so be patient, aim good spot and it will go down... He always laugh at me and his son with our fancy rifle/ammo/scope...

Sendero - Great pictures! Sorry about calling your girl a boy! I hope to take my little boy out this year. I am sure he would be very excited.

PS. The closer the conception is to the actual ovulation, the better the chance of having a boy. Not that it matters, a healthy baby is a blessing!

Heck I'm certainly not thinkin the worst of you! You're a good joe! Just pointing out that here in the east is far from the paradise in the west. I've got some buddies that used to live here and hunt with us 25 or so years ago. They now live in Edmonton and have told us (and still tell us) about all kinds of great hunting they have each year in Alberta! I'm a little jealous, but I do make my living and have all my family here around Montreal...or else you better believe I'd be out there too!;)
 
Hey Sendero! Awesome pics! Thanks for sharing the info of what it's like out there.

We have a lot of clear cuts out here too, and I use a 300 WM as my moose rifle. (Verandrye parc and Zec Brascoupe Desert).

Who knows, maybe I'll have some pics this year too!

To Sendero and Woodsman, thanks for your nice replies. The hunting here now is so much different than it used to be, there are now so many rules and restrictions. Actually, in nearly all the province of BC, the only moose shootable without a draw, is the immature bull, the same as you have shot.
I have had very good friends from Quebec. I can talk no French and they were new at English, but we got along fine and had some great times together. Hunters and fishermen sort of have a language of their own and I would love to go on a hunt in Quebec with the local hunters.
 
Anybody on this forum ever thought of a hunting exchange lottery?
Pay 10 bucks, (and maybe some sponsors kick in some gear), and we could have a "Westerner go East" and an "Easterner go West" for a 10-14 day hunt or something. The expeditions and any successes could be written up on G-nutz for all to see.
I think it would be a gas.
 
I've had NO problem dropping them with a 125gr Broadhead!!
Or a 300gr sabot outta my inline,
or a 165gr Sierra outta my .308, It's shot placement that will define a clean humane and ethical kill :).

In over 20 years of hunting in B.C., my "meat" rifle was a Ruger Carbine in .308 Winchester using a 165 grain bullet. The 18 1/2 inch barrel made for fast handling in the dark timber, but it was still effective at longer ranges. It's not that I had only one rifle, because I had my choice of a lot of different rifles and calibres. It is simply because it worked.

Anyone who has hunted a lot will admit that about 80% of his game has been shot at under 200 yards. (We are talking about eating stuff, not Gophers, Coyotes, or varmints.) Probably, most of it around 100 yards or under.

I have seen Indians in Northern Alberta shoot a moose in the lungs with a .22 rimfire, then gently and slowly herd it toward a road where they could easily butcher it. When it arrived at the spot they wanted it, they just left it alone until it fell. Not a very humane way, but it was their way of hunting, and they did use the meat.

SHOT PLACEMENT IS WHAT COUNTS! A BB that hits something is more effective than a Magnum that misses. A round through the heart/lungs/spine area will get you tasty eating --a shot in the ass will get you a long tracking job and probably a lost animal.

Anything that will shoot a 150 grain bullet at a MV of 2700 fps will drop anything you come across in North America, but I will qualify that by saying that I would definitely like a larger calibre if I were hunting the big bears. I definitely have respect for anything that can eat me.
