How much is a reasonable amount??

This is a reply I got back from the Chief Inspector of explosives. I asked him what would constitute a "reasonable amount"

Dear Sir,

In the project to rewrite the Explosives Regulations in plain language, currently nearing completion, we will probably replace "reasonable quantity by "100,000 rounds." Your quantities would certainly fall within this limit.

We post proposed new regulations on our website for comment. You may wish to visit it at www.nrcan.gc.ca/mms/explosif/index.htm

I hope this answers your question.

Yours sincerely,

Got to watch NRC, they have been trying real hard to add heavy restrictions to handloaders. The 100,000 round figure could be derived from the amount of powder in 100,000 rounds of .22lr.......which probably works out to 1000 rounds of .308 or something. They have already said they want to reduce the amount you can store in your home by half (from 10kg to 5kg) and you have to be 25m from nearest residence, which would virtually elimnate all reloading within every city in canada.

100000 rounds, assuming a round is a round is a round.

200 cases or 400 flats of shotgun shells.

200 bricks of .22 ammo.

2000 boxes of centre fire pistol.

5000 boxes of centre fire rifle.

For the multi disciplined shooters

50 bricks of .22, 100 flats of shotgun ammo, 500 boxes of centre fire pistol and 1250 boxes of centre fire ammo.

Personally, I like could live with this number.

Brad.

RePete,
Sounds like an anti's line of reasoning.;) You've tied amount to usage. By your subjective, competition biased method, very few GunNutz would be in compliace with a "reasonable" amount of ammo.

No, Stevo, it's not an anti reason.

Those figures are pulled out of the air and are for each gun. So if you shoot IPSC and compete in Open, Production, Standard, there's more than 30000 rds already. Get the idea?

A reasonable amount is determined by YOU, and you only.

RePete.

How many other items might "society" decide to limit for our own good? How would society define how much is a reasonable amount of potable water for one to store, or how much is a reasonable amount of money for one to make?

100,000 rounds... Thank you, omniscient government, for saving us from ourselves yet again!

A reasonable amount?

As much ammunition as you could ever possibly want or use ... times two ... so long as you don't use it in a harmful manner.

That's my idea of reasonable. Man I hate these laws.

for me a reasonable amount is how much I can afford to spend on my ammo. Currently I have about 4,000 rounds of each of the calibres I shoot often (pistol) and about 2,000 rounds for rifle. I also have enough compenents to put together about double that. I'd like to have about 4 times that though. If I had the money I'd have 100,000 rounds each of 9mm, .40, and .45. I'd have at least 20,000 round of match .308 and at least 50,000 rounds of match .223, coupled with at least 50,000 rounds of .22 LR and .17HMR or .17 M2. I'd also have at least 10,000 rounds of .50 AE, .44 Mag, and .357 Magnum. Probably at least 10,000 rounds of .38 too.
I wouldn't find those numbers unreasonable in the least. That would allow me to keep shooting in the event that ammo became hard to get (wartime usage etc), and not have to worry about inflation or silly taxes on ammo.
I figure a pallet of each calibre is about perfect.
