how much is the cost of ammo

Its priced pretty much the same as any other center fire hunting ammo. You get what you pay for to some extent. You can get is as low as $14.00 a box for Winchester soft points and go up from there. Easily spend $30.00 a box for something not too exotic, or spend $50 or more for a very specialized bullet.

Sorry for the newbie question, although it's relevant to the thread, I'd say: why is it that ammo (at least in Canada) is sold only in boxes of 20 for .308? Is this some law? Am I in for some Liberal-bashing :p?

I would imagine that prices would be lower if one was able to buy in bulk, say boxes of 50 or 100 instead of 20 at a time...

two sided sword:
manufacturer wants to get the highest price for their ammo in the market niche that they are pursuing

and also Match ammo prices are about $1.50-2.50 per round, it's easier for one to purchase 20 for $40, than say 100 for $200  or for argument sake $190

Let's take the price for match ammo that Ruthless quoted at $30-40 per box of 20. Use the low end of $30 per 20 and multiply that 5 times. If you thought the sticker price of $30 was high, who in their right mind would spend $150 for a box of 100.

I have seen some hunters carry the same box of 20 rounds for 15 years. It is sad to say but there are guys that buy one box, shoot 2 rounds maybe to confirm zero and use the other 18 round to go the deer camp. The next year they fire 2 more round and take the remaining 16 to deer camp.

If you want bulk ammo at a cheap price you have to start reloading.

Easy. 3 rounds to sight in, 8 rounds for each deer you shoot over the next 2 years, and an extra for passing around at the campfire when discussing how the 308 is the only cartridge for hunters who know what they are doing.........

Plus ammo goes stale so after 2 years it's time for a fresh box anyway.:D

I wasn't necessarily referring to match .308 ammo - just .308 ammo in general.

Although I saw your points, if a box of 20 would cost 30$ (as was the case in your examples) then wouldn't there be a reduced price for 100? Like 20@30$ means 100@120$ or something? Or is that just wishful thinking?

To me 100 rounds of .308 is not bulk. That will only just cover a weekend match. If you want to buy a case of ammo you might be able to swing a deal.

You can often find milsurp ammo at gun shows. A typical price might be $8-9.00 a box of 20. The "battle packs" of 10 packs of 20 cartridges might be around $85.00 a pack. That's 147 grain fmj ammo. I've bought corrosive primed 308 for as low as $5.00 a pack of 20. Actually I have quite a bit, if anyone want some for that price.

308 ammo

Well, if you are just looking for regular "blinking" ammo and do not mind milsurp, check out one of the site sponsor Wolverine Supplies.

I think it is $635 for 1260 rd non-corrosive. If you buy 5 cases or more, it is 10% off.
