How much is this Garand worth?

A while back I read that the Danish VAR replacement barrels are superior to the WW2 USGI era barrels as the metal is "Softer" (WW2) and wears out much faster. Also the VAR barrels are very accurate.
But that stands to reason - 1940's to 1960's technology in metallurgy.

The Itallian M1's are as good as it gets, made in peace time, using the latest drawning numbers available. VAR barrels are nice, being even more recent manufacture, but I would put them on par with the Breda and Beretta made barrels. My 1955 Breda still outshoots my 1968 VAR barrel. :)

The metal is fine on P&S rifles & they come with wood stocks (probably need to refinish them).....you will have to add $100 to this guys rifle (minimum) to get a stock set.
P&S have rifles for $600, and you only pay GST if out of province so $630.

The stock pictured on that rifle is a Ramline replacement stock...about $100. We sold a number of these Garands with these stocks about 10 years ago. A large crate of guns belonging to Allan Lever (Lever Arms) was dropped in shipping causing most of the stocks to shatter or crack. He replaced them with these Ramline stocks as there were no original replacement stocks available at that time. The guns of course were all Danish lend lease guns that were flooding the country at the time and they were sold relatively cheap (compared to what Garands go for now.) They were good shooters with the Ramline stocks but of little collector interest and as I recall they sold for about $500. As a shooter I think they would go for about $650 to $700 not including the bayonet and extras. There are a few original stocks kicking around and I might have one or two hiding in my vault if someone wants one. By the way this brings up old memories of being in the back of Lever Arms and Allan letting Dianne and I pick out any Garands we wanted from the couple of thousand he had there. They were stacked on skids about 8 across 8 rows deep. He had crates and crates of bayonets, scabards, new original parts including barrels. It was like a dream going through all thoses guns and parts spending hours back there getting full of grease and loving every moment. Ah... the good old days.Phil.
 
"...No.'s from the parts..." Those are drawing numbers and have nothing to do with the serial number or the manufacture date and aren't supposed to match. If any of 'em do match, somebody has done that. It decreases the value.
The receiver was made in 1944. '3213724' is the serial number.
You're right about its collector value. It has none due to the stock. It's a typical "mixmaster". Makes it a shooter, not a collector's piece. Most assuredly refinished, but not with Parkerizing. Black phosphating most likely. That's not really a bad thing for a shooter though.
WRA is Winchester.
SA is Springfield Armory.
The M1 bayonet(that'd be the designation of the bayonet. Made from 1943 to 1945 with some made in 1953.) is worth $80 to $100 by itself. Even though something has been done to the scabbard.
I doubt the rifle is worth a grand. Certainly not $1500 to $2000. Mind you, that Danish VAR barrel enhances the value. Epp's recently sold a 1953 vintage SA rifle with a VG bore and the Ramline stock for $689. (They have a complete, post-war, walnut stock with all the metal for $249 too.) Your's is worth a few hundred more due to the barrel.
I'd lose the plastic stock, put on a wooden stock and go shoot it. You'll likely change your mind about selling it.
 
It would seem that it is currently worth about $750. I had the rifle priced at $800 for one week, and had two lower offers - then I lowered the price to $700 and was (and still am) flooded with offers. Thanks for all the help everyone.
 
I'll have to agree with "hitzy" and the other guys :
$ 650.00 is a fair price, find somebody who realy wants to buy this rifle and you'll be able to get $ 750.00...

The rifle was already sold before my last post. I sold it to the first person that PM'd me about an hour after the price was lowered.

Just so I don't look so dumb I should add that the deluge only continued because many people do not understand what SPF means. I added SPF to the heading once I had agreed to the deal, and left it there until the buyer had received, inspected, and was happy with the rifle. The offers have now stopped since I have slotted the add for deletion. But I don't blame anyone, it took me a while to learn what SPF meant (Sold Pending Funds for all newbs finding this thread).

Sounds like you got about what it was worth...in USD. If it was in CD, and I'm assuming you got $700-$800, you probably got mid to low book, based on our current US prices. From the pics, it was a nice looking rifle. I have one of my 308 Garands that wears a Ram-line, and I like it. Good lockup, accurate and I appreciate the extra length. As Sunray said, it itsn't all original, but that really doesn't mean much to someone who wants a shooter, not a collector. (my opinion as a shooter, which is deinitely biased... if it don't shoot, you have a 9 1/2 pound club). Down here in Yankville, everyone is going crazy on buying/hoarding everything because of the new Administration.
I have read some of the posts here on the Site, and it is too bad you can't get ammo from CMP, (civilian marksmanship program). We Yanks can get good M2 Ball, 150 grain FMJ, for around 30 cents a pop. Pretty accurate as well.
