A friend at work gave me this rifle today, and was wondering how much it was worth, I would like to re-blue it and refinish the wood, but if its worth alot i won't touch it and keep it like this. I would also like to know the model of it so i can find a set of bases/rings for it.

Info that i found on it:

Husqvarna Vapenfabriks A.B. 270 winch.

Serial number matches the one on the bolt.

The last 2 pictures is a whole that was drilled on the side i guess from one of the owners, i have no idea what it was for but it does not pass through the action.

If you go to : http://www.skydevaaben.com/index.xml with your serial number, you will find a table for year of manufacture by Husqvarna, and also a table listing all versions / models that they made in commercial arms. Without knowing your serial number, I would guesstimate that you have a 640 series Husqvarna, based on an FN Commercial M98 Mauser action, guessing again about mid 1950's manufacture, so any scope base for 98 Mauser, Parker Hale Safari, etc., etc. would work. You asked about how much it is worth?? I am guessing that you are looking at a $200 to $250 hole there, so based on your pictures, I would again guesstimate that you could get $350 to $450 from someone who wanted a real good "shooter", as opposed to a "looker".

My serial number is 133*** so basically i have checked and it says 1952 as year of productions, but doesn't list the model dates, or i haven't looked in the right place

I changed my first reply to clarify that it looks like you have a commercial FN action, not the military FN action - there does not appear to be a thumb slot in the left hand receiver wall. From my link that I gave you above, there is a table about the models - I am pretty certain you have a Husqvarna 640 - says was made until 1953 and included 270 Win. Go to the Tradex site to see similar for sale in various calibers - again, just my opinion but 8x57 would be pretty common, lower price range, and 9.3x62 pretty much in demand so higher. Just being me, I had to have a 9.3x62, so paid north of $650 for same Husqvarna 640 that you have , without the hole...

Looks like mine, a 1953 270 with a 144,### serial number.

Yours looks like it is in very good shape. Love the remaining gloss in the bluing.

Play with it if you want, I touched up the oil on my wood and left the metal alone. Your metal looks nicer than mine. Great hunting rifle, but not a huge pot of gold. Particularly with that god-awful hole gouged in the side.

My gun shop owner took one look at mine and named off the Weaver base numbers needed. Pretty standard commercial Mauser action bases. Weaver 45 on the rear and 46 on the front.

Don't run that hole down, it may have saved some ones life!
It looks to me like it was hit with a high velocity, small calibre rifle bullet.

Yes, H4831, that occurred to me as well! I have messed up many attempts at drilling and tapping metal, but never got anything looking that bad with either a drill bit or a tap. So, it could be a high velocity bullet strike - and that would make a real great story to go with that rifle! :)

I have 2 of these Husky .270's, excellent hunting rifles and they are very accurate shooters that are way better built than most rifles you can buy new today and I agree the hole in the side of the receiver looks a lot like a bullet strike!

It should be easy to fix by getting a decent welder to TIG weld the hole up with copper placed at the back to stop any flow through and then rebluing that spot after fileing it smooth.

Too me it looks like someone was going to "gun schmidt" a side mount. But they broke a bit and said "ta hell wit' it"

I know 640s had different model numbers per chambering. 646 = 6.5x55, 648 = 8x58, 649 = 9.3x62

What .220 swift, .270 win, and 30-06 are designated is beyond me. I do know it's not a model 1000, 1100, or 2104F as the stock is beech and those export models sported walnut.

I believe they are recently imported Repeterstudsare Modell 640 (Repeating Rifle Model 640) covers all in the top calibers until 1949 and .220, .270 and 30-06 after that date, most of the export versions of the model 640 had walnut stocks and later date Scandinavian local sales just got beech stocks!

The .270 Win only Repeterstudsare Model 2104F (Repeating Rifle Model 2104F) was made for only one year and had no checkering on the simple stock!

It's hard to say for sure without first hand close inspection, but that part of the receiver is normally little more then about 1/8 inch thick and the large outside hole looks way deeper than that like the metal is pushed outward like in a bullet strike and the tiny inside hole is barely protruding though that thin section of metal in the action very much unlike what you would get when tapping a large hole like that!

True.. But! I've seen some of the handy-work associated with these imports. Drilling too fast with too much pressure and no oil = heat and broken bit. Bullet strike... the angle is suspect. The chance of a 90 degree hit on the raceway is far too... "convenient"

mkrnel, th key word is "not"
