does anyone know the decibel level of each caliber? i live in an area where i have one neighbor who doesnt mind me shooting, and vice versa. we live in a rural area. I was wondering how much louder a 22mag or 17 hmr are than a 22lr? is it really noticeable? I am trying to decide between a 22wmr and 17, or just get another lever 22.

thanks

22WMR & 17HMR are definitely louder then .22LR
Not sure of the decimal levels, but you'll certainly notice a difference!
If you're looking for "quietness" stick with the 22LR caliber. :)

Depends....
Are you shooting in the open to allow the sound to disperse or in and around objects that will allow the sound to bounce back?
Are you squeezing off shots every 5 to 10 seconds or every minute or so?
IMPO without hearing protection, your ears will be ringing in 15 min. or so of constant shooting....

yea i guess there are a lot of variables. I like the 22wmr and 17hmr for its killing power for varmint but i like the sound level and price of the 22. i dont shoot much varmint, maybe a coon or 2 a week, so i guess the 22 is still fine for that.

The choise is really yours... if you already use high velocity ammo, you will notice that there is a marked difference, but if you use standard velocity 22lr, you will notice a VERY large difference.

I would honestly stick to coon headshots. Why complicate things when 22lr already does the job just fine?

"...I can comfortably shoot the lr without ear protection..." Don't do that indoors. A .22 Mag is considerably louder than a LR, but you won't notice the difference in the bang outside. You will most assuredly notice the difference in the cost of ammo for either a Mag or a .17.

How important is your hearing to you? Even with 22 I use buds. My Dad is def because of flying without using a headset. I don't want to end up like him.
I'd say 22 WMR is less than a .223 more like a 9mm rifle. Much louder than a 22.

Louder for sure. .22WMR and .17HMR don't have the same kind of report, but both are noticeably louder than a .22lr. One thing you might consider is 17M2 if you have a reliable source for ammo. (not that common in Ontario) Very flat shooting, 17gr. V-Max bullet, but same report as a 22lr since it IS a necked-down .22lr case. Last I looked, there is a used CZ American in 17M2 in the EE. Rare to find a CZ in M2, and I bet it's a gem. My Marlin 917M2 is a favorite of mine. Haven't hunted with it, but it's a fun 100 yard shooter, and quiet compared to those magnum rimfires.

A few weeks ago I forgot my ear protection at home.
Put about 60 rounds through my .22WMR in about an hour.
Was very surprised...when I got home certain sounds were gone. The one I noticed most was my home alarm system. When you let yourself in it beeps till you hit the cancel button.
No beeps at all unless I was right beside the unit.
Took about a week before I could hear them again.
Definitely don't recommend shooting the .17 or .22WMR without protection.

i have noticed i have lost all my high frequency hearing, beeps and buzzes and what not. it kind of sucks. its time to go see a specialist.

but regardless. if im gonna have to grab ear plugs or muffs everytime i go to dispatch a varmint, i'd rather just use the .22. and quite frankly, its too expensive to shoot loads of.
