expect 25-30 FPS less per inch of barrel.
At 1 point in time that may have held true, but with the powders of today this is not always the case.
The 22" barrel on my 308 has no problem spitting 190 gr SMKs out the muzzle at 2675 fps. Many are shooting 175 gr Bergers at well over 2700 fps.
New powders or not, those seem like pretty stout loadings for a .308!? The 190 MK's anyway.
Will the same hold true for other calibres that use slower burning powders ? Specifically, I'm thinking of my .260AI. I have 20" barrels on a .308 and a .223 and absolutely love how they handle. Since both these cartridges use medium burnrate powders, I can see that a shorter barrel won't affect velocity as much. The .260AI favours slightly slower powders. I've got a 26" tube on my rifle and would really like to go shorter.
I guess myself it depends what you want to use it for.I have a 308 built by rick at atrs with 22 inch barrel and the seep of a 168 smk at almost 2800fps with amazing accuracy
