How much optic does one really need for longer range hunting?

First off optical clarity/quality outweigh any other feature/variable in choosing an optic.

Secondly, I find a large magnification zoom range to be important as it is the most versatile. Something with a 5x or 6x magnification zoom range. My preference is a 3-15x scope. 3x is still very useable for close range shots and 15x is more than enough for long range shots although I seldom go above 12x. The ability to go a little above what you usually use is nice. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Just my .02

One other thing to mention is you become accustomed to magnification, be it high or low, well I found that anyways.

Don't have to have a variable on 3 to see things close nor to you have to have it on 15 to hit a critter at distance. It's all relative to your eyes and again, glass quality makes a difference.

Sitting on the bench , I'll take all the zoom I can as long as the sight picture remains clear.

If you are placing the target - power doesn't matter that much, as you can make the target size fit the needs of the scope.

Both my Steyr Scout 308 are mounted with

S&B 1X8X24
S&B 3X12X50 PMll

For hunting purpose this is enough magnification.
