When I first started IPSC, I would shoot probably 50-100 rounds a week for accuracy and would compete in a level one every week.
I spent a lot of time being too fast for myself, but when I settled down I saw real progress, but nothing on the level of top shooters (A shooters and better).
Although you were asking about the cost of shooting, as others have mentioned, there is a lot to practice. Gun handling in general can be broken down into a number of microskills as can basic movement in general. You can improve your score without improving your shooting at zero cost. I think every action shooter will agree with this notion.
