How much scope on a 416 Rem Mag

Considering your desire for something higher power, a 2-10x42 would seem the perfect solution. Still lots of magnification at the top end but low enough magnification for the close up stuff.
 
on all my bigbores and actually most of my rifles i prefer a 1.5x-5x or in that range.plenty of scope for moose/bear out to 300yds or so
 
I have the real 416...Mr Rigby's unbelted version. It wears a 1.5-5x Leupold with the heave duplex reticle which was plenty of scope for a 287 meter one-shot kill on a Springbok. It's all the scope I need on it. You could go 2.5-8x but I prefer the brightness and low power that the 1.5x offers in case I have to wade into the bush after something.

I also prefer scopes mounted low on heavy kicking rifles to keep my face down on the stock. I hate 40/42mm scopes for this very reason.
 
On Big Bores and heavy hitters I prefer, no, demand, eye relief of at least 4" and prefer 5". On my desk, within reach, is an old Silver Safari Burris fixed 4X by 21mm. It has an eye relief of 5" and has been on several 45-70s, a .375 H&H and a Ruger #1 in .45-70 LT (long-throat) with ballistics that equal a .458 WM. I've used it a lot for black bear over bait in wilderness areas.However, with age I need a bit more brightness after the sun has gone down, especially in dark timber. So, I 've sort of retired the Burris 4X. But I've had a newer version (read: brighter) on a .458 WM with the same dimensions. Today, I prefer 2 - 7X by 32 or 35mm. That's ideal for any of my hunting, close or the other side of far.

For large game, like moose, a fixed power of 3X or 4X is plenty. And they are not too much for brushy conditions either. On my 2 - 7s, I usually set them on 5X and leave them there unless I know I'll be walking through heavy brush or timber... then it'll be 2X.

A buddy was over shooting on my range today and he was shooting a VX-III 1.75-5 and we both agreed the B&L was clearer, briter and crisper, that really surprised me because for some reason a always compared the B&L to the mid range bushnell line. My moose hunt is pretty much over for this year so probably won't get around to testing it this year so I have put it up for sale/ trade but if nothing amazing comes up I will keep it and it might become a go to rifle.
 
Make sure it has enough eye relief so you don't end up looking like this.

The Leupold VX3 1.5-5 is a classic for big bores. On my next big rifle, I may try a Trijicon 1-4x.
