How much shooting is too much ?

When you run out of ammo... that's too much...

NOPE...when you run out of ammo and go home, that's exactly the RIGHT amount of shooting...

When you wake up next to the wood stove in the shooting shack and the fire went out hours ago, and the side of your face is stuck to the floor from a concussion nose bleed... "and" your ammo box is empty...that's TOO MUCH!
:D

Or just do like the majority of us gun nuts and buy a cabinet or two or... of guns and never worry about it. If I were to put 20 rounds down the pipe of a different rifle every day of the year (not including the .22s or handguns) I still wouldn't manage 500 rounds per gun in a year.

I just checked, and I've put 1150 rounds of handloads through my TRG-22 in the past year.

How do I know? I kept every empty box of bullets I used for reloading. 15 boxes (100) and there are 350 loaded rounds in the safe.

Doesn't feel like too much to me, but I'm starting to think I should be concerned about the barrel lifespan!

Hello everyone.

Shooting season is opening soon at my local range. I plan to go once a week but need some inforamtions from some seasoned shooters.

I have a Remington 7600 in 30-06 that I really like to shoot. But I also use it to hunt an I would like it to stay accurate. This gun was made in 1989 and has shot about two boxes of factory ammo. I was wondering how much can you shoot a rifle until it looses it's accuracy or needs work. I know that this limit is in the thousand rounds and depends on the quality of the rifle (metal hardness, barrel rifling etc.) but I would like some pointers.

Thanks,
Seb

If you really like to shoot it, why does it only have 2 boxes through it in 13 years?
Well I didn't have much time before this and I finally took the time to request my PAL last summer. I started hunting again this year and my dad bought this rifle for me almost 10 years ago from the widow of a guy who probably just zeroed the gun and shot about a box of ammo with it.

If you were to put 100 rounds per year though your rifle, it would take 50 years for you to wear it out. 100 rounds a year is a lot of shooting. However, it’s up to you to decide if the accuracy you are getting out of the rifle is acceptable to be hunting with.

If you had a rifle chambered for a magnum round then your barrel life is a lot shorter. 7mm Remington Magnum or .270WSM barrel life is around 1,200 - 2,000 rounds well standard chambering rifles like the 30-06, .243, or .270win are 3,000 - 5,000.

100 rounds a year is a lot of shooting? I put a 60-100 rounds through my Krieger heavy barreled m14 each range trip. Which is at least once a week.
When the heat haze generated by the barrel is effecting your aim it's time to stop for a few minutes.

how much-too much

In my late teens I used to leave work at 4:30 everyday, spring, summer and fall and drive east of Calgary, with my 700 BDL .243 and shoot any varmint that moved until dark and was always out of ammo before getting back to town. I took 200 rounds with me every night and loaded till 2 am every morning. This rifle shot something in excess of 15000 rounds before it totally quit grouping. There was also weekend forays into gopher patches and hunting in the fall, plus dogs and jacks every week end in the winter. There is no such thing as too much shooting, don't overheat your barrel and shoot as much as you can afford, you'll only become a better shot.
The biggest downside to the amount of shooting I used to do was having my name and obsessed in the same sentence alot. It also made maintaining a relationship with girlfriends very difficult, but man did I become an amazing shot. I eventually got more guns so as to spread the shooting over more barrels in a year, but for more than 15 years I shot well in excess of 10000 centerfire rifle rounds a year and as many or more CF pistol.
With all that shooting I have managed to OFFICIALLY shoot out 2-243s and 1-7mmRM. I pulled these barrels and cut them and measured the wear, didn't just eyeball and proclaim them to be shot out. I'm also pretty sure I shot out a 6.5-08 I had built for sillouette and another 300 Win but rechambered both barrels to a significantly longer cartridge and carried on.
A lot of earlier post hold a lot of weight in the max a man can shoot these days, until the wife is angry, all you can afford, all that time allows etc etc etc. Unfortunately, all these factors weigh on my shooting time now (afford not anymore) but it has all whittled me down to a few hundred rounds a year and I fear I may never shoot out another barrel.
