How much was a sporterized Lee Enfiled going for in 1967?

Full stock?

I remember them in the Simpson-Sears and Eaton's catalogue and then later when Princess Auto and a couple of surplus stores flooded the country with mail order catalogues.

They must have got a bulk price from Canada Post.

I remember in 1970 ful-stock LE was still only about $14.95 in the Princess auto catalogue.

In 1967 or 1968 my Dad bought a No. 4 Lee Enfield for me at a small town Saskatchewan hardware store - was "MacLeod's", I think - I am pretty sure it was $16.99. It was "sporterized", with shortened forearm wood and no hand-guards, but still had the military front and rear sight. At the time, as I recall, a "good job" paid $2 per hour.

Great, it is for an entry in a memoir I am writing. I was given a Ross in 1967 but I wanted to compare with LE prices at the time.

We bought some brand new still with the grease from Hercules Sales in Toronto in '65, Just the metal actions with no wood for $10.00. We would make the wood and adjust them to be similar to commercial hunting rifles. Time and wood we had lots of.

My first rifle was a full stock No4 Mk1 in pristine condition. I picked it out of a barrel full of No4s for $15.00 back in 1967 in a surplus store. IIRC, the crate of milsurp 303 ammo I bought at the same time cost me more than rifle. Of course, making $125.00/wk. it wasn't as cheap as it appears now but still a good buy at the time.

15 to 20 years ago, you could buy plenty of sprterized Enfields at any gun show in Ontario and Quebec for $25.00

In 1963 or ‘64 I bought a crate of 10 SMLE’s, each packed in cosmoline and wrapped in heavy brown paper from the catalogue, $70.00 for the crate including the free delivery to my local Simpsons mail order store. Cleaned them, removed the top wood and shortened the forends, sold them quickly for $15 each. Made a killing!
That $150 was probably close to my monthly take home pay at that time.

My first rifle bought I was 16 yrs old was a Savage marked 303 in 1969...$19.XX....with tax was an even $20.00 Windsor Ontario.....they literally had garbage size pails full of them.

Its a common comment at gunshows - "What $900 for a Lee Enfield ...I bought my first one for a dollar 25...."

I usually ask if I can use their time machine when they are not.

I thought my dad paid 35.00 for his BSA no1 shtle 3* sporter from sears but i would have to ask him.
It came sporterized with a black painted nosecap on the shortened forend. I believe it came with a Weaver T-01 mount , weaver rings and a bushnell banner 3-9 x 40 ?
I still have it and was my first real hunting rifle. Took my first deer with it and my biggest deer with it .... and many others.
Still have it and was pondering sending on a trip to Vulcan to get the metal finish restored.
The gunsmith who drilled it for the T0-1 rail got the holes off center so the rail sits angled to the left but it has good irons.

I was tempted over the years to get one of those inexpensive Lee Enfields or even one of the higher grade Parker Hale versions, but since 1967 I already had a rifle, my Ross 303 and who needs more than one rifle right? lol
