Start with SPS DM, Leopold bases & rings & Nikon scope.
Look through barrel, visible burs courtesy of Remy quality assurance. Clamp rifle, careful not to collapse magazine well with industrial vice. Lap barrel with jag/cloth/lapping compound.
Clean rings, receiver, screws etc. with brake cleaner.
Note one of front drillings blind, both rear drillings all the way through. Recall thread that when screws all the way through they can bind with bolt.
Apply drop of lock tight (blue) to threads and carefully screw longer screws in front base, shorter screws in rear base (so wont protrude through).
Check rings for alignment, center windage on rear base, mount scope, center reticle, use bore sighter... clean up, place bolt back in rifle to place in case, bolt wont lock up... Front screw protruding into chamber... swap screws with rear one, clean off lock tight... Bolt happy. Scope back on... But... one of front threads blind - tight or bottoming out? Scope off again... check, it bottomed out, swap screws, clean off lock tight... Recenter windage, reboresight... (at least could remove rear ring from base without removing scope from rings so helped overall orientation).
Maybe should not be admitting to this. Wait, this is a story my friend told me about a time he mounted a scope on a rifle. At end of the day, all good.
Tomorrow another rifle, another scope - this time its a grooved receiver so as long as objective lens on muzzle end it should work out okay.
