When you have a brake or comp on a 16" 7.62x39, how much more obnoxious is it to the shooter in terms of noise, etc? Not someone beside him but the one pulling the trigger?

Stands to reason not as bad as high pressure, more blasty rifles right? Have tried em on a variety of things but never the 45,000 PSI, 2300 fps 7.62x39....lots of rifles are starting to come with them, like the Ruger American Gen 2 etc so makin me wonder.

Not sure about a 16” but it sure is fun out of a12” with a birdcage. Everyone at the range wants to know what you are shooting. The huge fireball is an added bonus.

Were they ever bad to shooters? From my 223 experience they are the way to annoy a shooter nearby but never yourself. From my 7.62 / 5.45 experience (with standard AK47 and 74 brakes and compensators) - not bad at all, I had no discomfort, I did not use hearing protection back then, different priorities. At the same time I must acknowledge that my hearing is quite damaged. I dunno if it was result of firing all kinds of small arms or maybe it was ####ing artillery piece that was firing 10 meter away and behind me. I could not hear a #### for the whole day after the first shell from the cannon, I could not even hear my rifle doing bang, it was more like popping sound... I mean I had plenty of opportunities to #### up my hearing and clearly I did not waste them.

I find 223s can get plenty louder with a brake yes. Including obnoxiously so

Sounds like you definitely have some good reasons for hearing loss alright!

It shouldn't be bad at all for the shooter, especially not at that length. I use linear brakes on anything less than 12" to direct everything forward. I use a standard 3 port brake for anything longer than that. Not pleasant for those standing around though lol.

Lol that reminds me of a gunsmith I once had, may he rest in peace. He was famous for saying " back in old country, everybody fire full auto machine gun on line, and nobody use sissy ear protection!!" In my best eastern block accentLaugh2

Not quite what you're asking about but my buddy bought one of those bolt on brakes for his sks. It didn't make much difference for the shooter as far as noise or concussion but it SUCKED to sit beside him. Especially considering the volume of fire typical of an sks.

I believe ya on that one.

See some stuff out of Ukraine of guys with no earpro really not being happy about a 74 fired near them, even in combat lol

Right on lol thanks!

Not really a high priority to get one or anything but if one comes on a rifle just wondering how much I'd despise it haha. Would rather like it.

Worse case, you decide you don't like it, remove it, and get yourself a thread protector.

Dunno man… brake dependent I guess. My bias braked .308 on a 26” just about would make me puke it would ring me so hard. Everyone else hated it too.

Oh yeah. Have shot braked rifles that are noticably louder than they were before, putting it mildly.

True that.

Linear comp could be a bit better than standard depending on location

I have an A2 flash hider on my Ruger Ranch 7.62x39 and the muzzle report is quite mild compared to my other hunting rifles and there is almost no visible flash even in low light, just a bit of an orange glow.

As a flash hider the old A2 works eh? Thats an option as a cool thread protector for like $30.

ok fair. but with 7.62x39 I dont think it's that bad. at least not the one I have on my type81

I’m running an MDT Brake on my 16” Ruger American Ranch. I run the same brake on my 6.5CM, .308, and .300WM. I don’t find it bad at all on the x39. By comparison, my Sig Cross .308 with the same brake on a 16” barrel actually popped the lid off my coffee cup on the next bench over :) It does a great job taming an already pretty tame rifle. I run a set of Peltor Tactical ear defenders. Never felt the need for more than that.
