How often do you clean your semi-auto?

New pistol shooter again. I recently picked up a new MP9. I am used to cleaning my long guns after every trip to the range or out hunting. I asked this question when I bought my MP and was told it was not necessary to clean after each use.
This doesn't make sense to me but maybe there is a reason.

Any comments or suggestions appreciated.

it's not necessary to clean every range trip, but i don't think it's bad to clean it after use.
i clean my pistols & rifles every range trip.
 
I don't do a full cleaning after each use. I usually wipe them down to remove any obvious grime, and maybe run a patch through the barrel. I think it depends on the gun too. I barely clean my Glock because it isn't a super-tight target pistol that will jam if not cleaned. I think your M&P is about the same.
 
I clean mine after every range trip.

How does that saying go? ....

"Clean your weapon after you finish using it,
after your done doing what your doing - clean your weapon,
If you have nothing to do - clean your weapon!"

Full cleaning each time , keeping your arms clean in the safe is the best thing you can do for your arms.

Glock or other...doesn't matter, cleaner is better.

Sometimes I use 4 to 6 guns, at the range, at any one outing. My policy is to never spend more time cleaning, than shooting.:)
 
Ha ha.... liars... I try to clean mine every trip, or within a day....

But one of my guns... Sig 226.... cleaned twice in 4 years... 20,000+ rounds and still goes bang every time.

I am curious about how long it will go....

plus, both times I did clean it, it looks new.

Do you need to clean after shooting? Absolutely not. Do I clean after shooting? Absolutely everytime.

You can probably feed a thousand or more rounds through the S&W M&P before having issues because the lack of cleaning I would wager.
 
It's not a bad thing to have an idea what your gun will do when it is filthy.

I will clean and lube mine before a big match or training session, but I can go 1200+ rounds with just a quick wipe of the breech through the ejection port and a drop of oil. (ATF off the truck dipstick in a pinch......)

There is nothing wrong with field stripping and cleaning after each trip. It might be overkill, but so what.
 
Well , for me it's true, I clean all my guns after a shooting session, tell me I am liar...well who are you to judge people ....
 
I usually clean them within a day of use, unless I only put a couple rounds through it then I don't worry so much.
