How Often Do You Clean

ya, i clean mine everytime i shoot it...really handguns are not bad at all to clean if you compare it to an sks cleanup after corrosive ammo!

On my gun Open and Standard guns I always clean the top end before every match...or every second practice (about 500+rds per practice) before a Level 3 I usually clean the bottom end before the last practice....then just the top end for the match again....

I never shoot a freshly cleaned gun at a match...

I'll give it a good clean a week before a match, put about 500 rounds through it...then I'm happy

I want to know it's going to work even when it's a bit grubby (which is most of the time)

For the SKS/AK or anything involving corrosive ammo, the firearm is cleaned after every range session. I learned the hard way and now have a slighted pitted AK bolt carrier.

For handguns, (Glock 17, Ruger P91) I usually wipe off the fouling and grit on the barrel/receiver as well as the chamber and feed ram. If they are to be shot again in another week, that's all the cleaning I do.

Once in a long while, I'll fully disassemble the Glock 17 and perform a complete cleaning.

I clean my centerfire handguns everytime I shoot them. My Ruger MkII Target gets the barrel cleaned everytime I shoot it, but it is stripped and cleaned every 500 to 1,000 rounds as it is a major PITA to strip and re-assemble, for me at least.

I clean all my guns fully after every range visit. Mind you, I have invested lots of money into my cleaning equipment. Mind you everything I own is clean, I clean my laptop twice a day and wax my truck once a month for example.

Cleaning

Rifles and shotguns after every range outing and then I try to get around too them once a month for a light oiling and pulling through. I try the same thing for my handguns but time alway seems to be of the essence :) I have only one rule I stick with. If I am heading to a match be it pistol or rifle, after my last practice I don't touch a thing until the match is done.

Just my .02c

Every time

I fieldstrip and clean all the reachable parts of any of my guns after every shooting session, even if I shot only a few rounds. I clean as well as I can, with the goal of making the gun look brand new. It may be a bit much, but I like to have my firearms in pristine condition.

I went nearly 20,000 rounds before I cleaned my Glock 22 (with the exception of the barrel which I cleaned for accuracy reasons). It continued to work but it was disgusting and covered with burnt powder. Eventually there was so much carbon that built up in the firing pin chamber that the firing pin was almost frozen in place. It took 5 pulls of the trigger and then the firing pin broke free and the pistol was working again. I actually cleaned it that day with CLP but I wanted to know how far I could go without cleaning it. It was my own Glock torture test and the Glock did better than even I thought it could. I tried the same thing with AR-15 but only got about 1500 rounds over the period of 2 months through it before the bolt won't move freely enough to cycle. I had to clean the AR-15 and recognize the obvious fact that the AR can't deal with the same level of abuse as the Glock. So to answer your question, it depends on what you are shooting.

I do one or 2 cleanings a year. My Sig P226,HK USP,and 1911s usually go through a few thousand rounds a year,I don't believe in over cleaning,I've seen way too many good rifles and pistols ruined this way at work.

What parts are ruined? Finish coming off due to excessive scrubbing or something?

Or is it something else?
