I plan on getting a new Mossberg 500 persuader. This will be MY first very own shotgun. Just a quick question!

How often do you tear down your entire gun? Beginning and end of spring ? I mean obviously clean barrel out after every use, but do you need to take out trigger mech and pump and all that as well? Every use? Once a month? 1 a year?

I clean the barrel after a few hundred rounds, certainly not after shooting a box or 2 of shells. Stripping it down depends on how much use it gets. Once a year is probably fine for average shooters.

Perfect ! that's what I was hoping to hear ! The damn sks and that corrosive ammo, its just gross after a day of sending 400 rounds through it... Pretty much have to tear the whole thing apart.

i like to clean the barrel after every use. i will give the gun a complete cleaning if it has got wet or dirty otherwise it gets a wipe down and a light oiling . i have seen a few shotguns that received little care and put away wet and they look and work poorly.

I only take it right down if it got wet or has a problem. Normally a quick barrel clean and a light wipe of oil on the outside. Occasionlly a drop of oil on critical points in the action.

Basically like farmer says, if it's wet, clean it well, other than that the odd patch down the barrel and a once a year cleaning/greasing and you're good to go

I pack mine around a lot. So it gets more dirty just from dust and dirt that carbon buildup. But every time I clean it, I tear it right Down. My 870 takes about 4 seconds to strip so I figure why not. Every couple months usually.

like, never, not counting the barrel.
and i dont believe the guys who say they pull it apart.

I would agree that the complete takedown of my Ithaca pump shotguns is pretty darn rare.
Barrel off cleaning yes, and a cleaning rag taken to all accessible parts while together.
No complete teardown unless, a llllooonnngg string of shooting or if a part is broken or if god forbid(!) it gets very very wet.
Some guys here would have a fit to know how Chief Watson, a SEAL during the Vietnam War who wrote "Pointman" cleaned his issue M37 Ithaca.

Edit: The most common cause of a chipped or broken wooden butt stock, is a loose stock through-bolt.

My 870 and Grizzly clone are dead simple to strip. I'd say once every year. I don't take apart the trigger group though, aside from installing a big head safety.

Awesome thanks guys ! The moss 500 seems like a really EASY tear down, so Im willing to bet ill be doing it three times a year maybe 5 I shoot a lot. Plus half the fun is drinking beers around a big table with buddies all cleaning the toys of the day.
