How old is this W571 snd 2400 powder?

Hi guys

I recently stumbled on an add locally advertising 6 lbs of 571 (same as HS-7) and 1-2lbs of 2400 for a very good price. I was interested in the 2400 mostly so I messaged the guy right away.

Long story short I bought it all, cans are in good shape, 3 lbs of the W571 are sealed and 1 lb of the 2400 is the same. Tins are in good shape so I figure it should be good to go.

I was wondering how old it is?? More of a curiosity then anything, old powder doesn't scare me, I'm still working on some H4831 powder in cardboard "tins" that Smellie gave me a year or 2 ago!!





Lastly has anyone ever tried W571 or HS-7 in reduced rifle cast loads?
 
I got rid of the last of my 571 a few years back when there seemed to be no application outside of shotgun.

I've used 2400 of that vintage, though: beggars and choosers you know ;). It was fresh with no signs of degrading.
 
ill tag along im curious too as thats the same containers my blue dot powders are in and 1 of the 2400s i got, the other 2400 is in a square tin i wonder which one is older?
 
I've still got a bit of 571 in the same 1lb can as yours, I think I bought it late 70's. I've never seen data for rifle calibers, but I have a copy of the 15th Edition Winchester Reloader's Manual which has data for 38 Spl., 38 Spl (+P), 9mm Luger, 40 S&W and 45ACP. I used it mainly for heavy 12gauge loads, but I've also used it in 45ACP with 230gr lead RN bullets. If you're interested in any of the data, let me know.
 
Otto, thanks for the offer of data! Most of my loading books are from the 60's-80's so I have lots of data for this powder.

I was wondering about using the 571 for reduced cast rifle loads because it's smack dab in between Blue dot and 2400 on the burn rate chart.

I know that 2400 and blue dot are useful for reduced loads so I figured perhaps 571 may do the trick. Can't find anyone who's done it though.

I wish I had known that a few years ago , I was given a 3lbs tin of 571 . I tried using it up in 38 special cast loads for my 357 rifle . The results were poor. I ended up getting decent performance in medium level cast rifle loads in the 7.62x54r and 444 marlin .
 
If I remember correctly the last time my dad last bought Win 571 was around 1993/1994. Not exactly sure where he got it from I could ask him? I am not sure what year it was discontinued, I have a couple pounds of 571 and HS7 for a magnum shotgun load.

So you have tried it??? Care to share your loads for the 54r???
 
I am using 14 grains of 571 under lee c 312-155-2r gives me 1475 fps over the crono . This load is safe in my rifle but there is no published data to support this load so all disclaimers apply

Thanks for the input, that's about what I was thinking the charge would be based on burn rate.
