How open are you about being a firearms owner?

"All around people knew who I was anyway, so I figured I was just gonna put up the flag" -American History X

this describes well how i feel about this.

:agree:

Take them both out to the range and get sense for what he's like - maybe put the fear of God in him a little.

Your daughter is both your best and worst opportunity for him to learn about your firearm practices - make sure she's up to speed on what should be kept confidential.

Ever thought maybe he was just trying to find a way to warm up to you?

Sure I did. But also, he just had a vibe to him that I didn't like. I usually don't trust those intuitions; before passing judgement on a person I prefer facts and evidence.

Which I've now got, because now he's in jail :/ Sucks to be right sometimes.

And what did he do to get to jail? Now you have triggered our curiosity...

I don't want to get into it, but it's a fairly long list of what would be, each on their own, relatively trivial misdemeanors. No innocents were hurt, nothing was stolen, but he is an all-caps DOUCHEBAG and I hope the kid (mine) smartens up about who she keeps company with :/

keep quiet about them!? The day my daughter brings home a bf especially a sketchy one is the day I openly give my shotgun a very very good cleaning in the living room!

Jeeps ya never know what life is gonna throw at you.

Good luck with your daughter. I hope she sees the light. I went through a simialr problem 20 sumthin years ago with an older sister starting to date a criminal. I did'nt have guns, ( he did and they were illegal). He new I did'nt want him around and once warned he never turned up until the day after I got out of Hospital from having a steel pin removed from my femur. When I heard him at the door, I got the best physiotherapy, kicking him all the way up the street. :D
Women, what are they thinking eh?

I am very open about firearms ownership, I have hundreds of all types. I only allow other gun owners to see them. I am , however, very confrontational with those who are anti firearms. I will not be looked down on, derided or insulted in any way shape or form by these clowns and have no qualms about putting these " sheeple " on the spot, publicly or privately.

I recently had a break in at my house - they went straight after the gun safe, and left the TV, tools, Xbox, 'shiny stuff' ect alone. We have an idea about who might have been invloved, but ultimatley you need to be carefull as to who you let know that you own firearms. Lesson learned here.

Care should always be taken. My safe is hidden, ammo in different part of house and hidden as well. The safe has a motion sensor aimed at the door to enter that room as well as it has no window to the outside. I own the guns so its my responsibility to take extreme precautions.

I told a friend once that I had an sks, after looking at picture on wikipedia he said that I owned an assault rifle. Its amazing how people can stereotype you just by telling them you own a rifle, during all of our friendship i had owned guns and he never thought of me a violent or dangerous person. But all of the sudden because I had something he regarded as an assault rifle, i know had this violent persona hidden in me and all it took would be something to set me off and turn into a killer.

If we get kicked out of bar, he'll start off on how im gonna come back and spray this place. Or if I did bad in a course in school (still in unviserity) hes asking me which days to skip class.

I think from now on I'll just keep it to myself, shooting is a hobby that I enjoy but I realize now the majority of people out there are probably against me. Its a shame really I'm the same person he know before, its just him whos changed.

Thanks for sharing that K.F :)

Unfortunately, it's a sad reality of our times. I try to be open about my involvement in shooting, and several of my co-workers live vicariously through me in that regard - especially the airsofters whose wives won't let them buy "real" guns :D

My previous supervisor (who's still with the company) is a high-strung anti, and she and I never saw eye to eye about much of anything. My current supervisor is a gun owner and really laid back, but I do sometimes have that niggling feeling that my old supervisor is going to come back and bite me in the @ss over this sometime down the road...The good news is that I've got a very slow burning fuse, so the odds of me saying or doing anything to provoke her wrath are slim ;)

Everyone that I know even moderately well knows I am a hunter and shooter. Certainly everyone in my home town. I am a firearms safety & hunter ed. instructor and have taught most people's kids and not a few parents at one time or another. Nearly all the landowners around here have met me knocking on their door for hunting permission in the fall. There is NO stigma attached to firearms ownership in rural Saskatchewan. Thank goodness! I feel very sorry for most of you.

Guess I must just have good neighbours and friends.
All my friends have fondled my guns, most have shot them, a couple even shoot regularly with me. Three of my 4 neighbours hunt, the other is ex CF. @ my work, about 1/5 of the people I associate with are hunters/collectors. Go figure....

Let everyone know. For those that immediately think you're a psycho, it causes a mental disturbance in them. "Before I knew he had guns, I thought he was a good guy." He might begin to question why this knowledge about gun ownership changes his opinion so radically. His continued relationship with you can only reinforce this dichotomy between what he perceives about you with his own senses, and what he has been led to believe about you based on anti-gun propaganda and bigotry.

I tell people that I am a gun owner and they get this weird look in their eye and say:

No sh*t sherlock, why else would you have that NRA hat on. :D

Considering that I have been directly or indirectly involved with getting 10% of our office registered, as well as getting another 20% of them out shooting. I would say fairly open.

My philosophy is that Canadian firearms enthusiasts have an OBLIGATION to be open, vocal and inclusive to interested newbies, because in the end the more citizens that believe gun-ownership is a harmless and positive thing, the better.

I'm a member of the far-left ATU... So I tend to keep my gun obsession to myself. Mind you, another local driver is an avid shooter, so I guess I made another shooting buddy.
