How rare is the HK UMP?

Quite easy to bring in (well, as easy as any other Restricted firearm)... the problem is getting H&K to sell you one.

In short, there are maximum a few dozen out there, and no prospects of more becoming available.

Why wouldn't HK sell you one? What about getting one off a private individual from the US for example?

I talked with the distributor for H&K at the sportsmen's show in Toronto. They indicated that it was a government issue that prevents new UMP's, G36's, and MP7A1's from being brought in to Canada.

Ours. It's not like there isn't demand for these guns. We've all seen the prices they command. It's only due to extremely limited supply.

Interesting... I was under the impression that it was a supply side problem getting them from H&K. Any idea about what excuses are being made to not allow more to come into the country?

They would not give details but they indicated that even trying to get those products in was a no win situation.

+1 I always thought it was an issue with German law not allowing civvies to own the fun stuff.

Only Class III's have UMP's in the States, and that's because they deal with LEO.

There IS definitely an issue on the German side of exports.

In order for a german gun to be exportable, it needs to be classified as "sporting purpose" or not based off a military gun. For example, the HK 416... The MR223 had to have the pin holes placed in different locations so they couldn't mate with a Mil Spec AR15/M16 lower. That's why the MR556 in the US has to be partly US made so it can use Mil Spec lowers (I'm actually not even sure if they are mil spec lower compatible or not)

We got the few of the fun guns into Canada, from movie deals or police department sales. They (Canadian gov. or RCMP) ended up passing laws that forbid the sale of used police guns to private citizens, not sure if movie companies are under the same restrictions.

They ARE in the FRT, non restricted or restricted depending on barrel length, so there is no problem in them GETTING into Canada, but HK Oberndorf cannot sell them due to German export laws, except for the guns they already have made as "sporting purpose" rifles.

^^There's your final answer^^

I believe there are less than 10 UMPs in Canada. I was told this by the only owner of a 9mm UMP in Canada. I've even fondled the thing in my greasy fingers, very cool !

The original shipment was either sent by accident or law changed after they were sent, I was told but cant remember which it was.
