How rust resistant is the 870 Express?

I hunt in salt marsh and salt water conditions.

i think if you clean if well after hunting its fine...

my friend left his express in the costco safe without air-ing it out first... got a good light coat of rust over it...

Like any zinc or manganese finish, they will rust very quickly when not doused in oil to protect it from rust. We haved coated a bunch of 870's recently so to protect them from rust whether they are in a harsh or wet invironment. Remingtons are great guns but what they lack is the factory finishes in which they offer.

I have an 870 wingmaster with an express (parkerized looking) slug barrel and I have had rust form on the outside of the barrel and not on the rest of the gun (blued). So yes the express finish seems to be more prone to rust than a blued one.

Murdoc is right, i don't count how much remmy 710 i have painted with armacoat for the same prob, some people don't care of steel part so rust came out very quikly, all my customers are VERY satisfed, the rust never come out. I have a VERY VERY rusty 870 that a native from the north (Waskaganish) gave me to paint, will post pic of before and after if some interested

I have an 870 express, it looked fine for the first couple of years until I forgot to wipe it down one time immediately folllowing a rainy goose hunt - I only got to it the next day. Now with rust spots all over the barrel/action it looks like the cheap piece of #### it is. Spend a little extra and go for either the Wing Master or a dipped gun, well worth the few extra pennies.

Also, depends on which Express you have ;) the older ones have real parkerizing which is pretty durable. The newer ones have some kind of cheap spray-on finish that tends to rust more easily.

Used one in the mangrove flats (sal####er estuaries) in Cuba for many waterfowl hunts - read sal####er, tropical rain & humidity ... just rinse it off with fresh water, dry thoroughly and wipe down with oil - don't leave it in a case ... no prblems !

i find the same thing about my hp9, its great but the finish isn't exactly what i am looking for, i like everyting about it just wish i could get it in a marine magnum finish!! i wipe it down with oil every couple of weeks or whenever i take it out to play but i need one i can neglect a bit
