How safe is bulk ammo storage ?

Now when I say "bulk" I don't mean factory ammo that you buy by the case ,
I mean just dumping 100's of rounds in a military ammo box or something similar.

Normally I store my ammo in those plastic boxes that hold 100 rounds, but I have run out of them and was thinking of just putting 1000+ rounds in a metal box.

How do you store your ammo ?

Humidity wasn't my concern as I'll be storing them in a house
I just wanted to makes sure I wouldn't start a chain reaction in a metal box full of .44 magnum while casually caring it to my shooting range !

Could you imagine if that sh*t actually happened. C'mon I think you knew the answer to your question before you asked.:p
 
Try getting ammunition to go off without heat or a firearm. Its not as easy as you think....unless you are blatantly stupid, then its natural selection.
 
Totally safe. I would be more conerned with damaging the tip of the bullet with rounds not FMJ and even that's a stretch.

When i was a young 12yrs old, my friend and i found a 30-30 cartridge. We thought it would be cool if we could make it go off into a piece of firewood and retrieve the bullet after!
We beat on the poor thing with a hammer until the primer did ignite and propelled itself into my leg!
The wound was not serious enough to inform my parents so we avoided any corporal punishment but a lesson had been learned!
We must have closed the flash hole in our efforts as the main charge did not ignite (lucky for us).
They say the angels watch over fools, drunks and small children.
I have been all three at times.

I'm with you on this one. I could tell stories from my childhood that would make you imagine my friends and I were retarded. How we survive to grow up is a bit of a mystery.
 
One time when I was young and very foolish, I took a 30-30 cartridge and put it on the end of the barrel of my BB gun, held it up as high as I could [straight up, carefully so it did not fall off] and pulled the trigger.
It went off alright, and I escaped without a scratch. Made the case into mostly shrapnel, the bullet went nowhere, and the primer, of course, exited the case head.
Made enough noise for my dad to come to see what happened.
That was worse than the cartridge going off, trust me!!
Didn't repeat that game.

now there is a thread that would require reading ----the stupid things we did with guns or ammo when we were kids
 
I keep it in several locations in case of fire. Not that i think it will blow up but because I don't want the risk of losing everything at once. Different buildings, different locations.
