How short can I make it?

I just bought an old hiawatha single shot 12 gauge. I was wondering how short can I cut the barrel so its still legal? Not sure if I will cuz I kinda like the gun as is, but was thinking of making it like the little backpacker one dominion makes. Any pics of what all you guys did to your lil old break barrels.

Uhhhh, wait just a second here. My non-restricted Valtro has a fixed stock and a 14" barrel. I think the barrel length of 18" applies to everything but shotties. As long as you're over 26" OAL, you should be good to go, no?

I've seen this question on so many threads, and from what I've gathered:

If you're modifying it yourself, for manually operated firearms the minimum barrel length is 18"+ and OAL is 26"+ and for semi's the barrel length is 18.5"+ and OAL is 26"+ (I thinks). Now, for those that have a norinco or dominion arms firearm that has a 14" or 12.5" or even the dlask shotgun with the 8.5" barrel they are non-restricted because they were FACTORY MADE that way. It is illegal for you to cut down your shotgun/rifle below the 18.5/18" marks. But if you have an 870 and one of the dominion arms 12.5" clones you can swap the barrels, but you then have to re-register it for the barrel length is less than 470mm (my metric imperial conversion sucks @.@) so yeah, that's pretty much it as far as "I" have interpreted all the legal information on here... If you want something the size of the backpacker save yourself some possible legal hassles and jail time and buy the backpacker. Now, there was a thread on here where a CGN'r DID make a little single shot into a pretty sweet looking little camp/truck/backpack gun. Can't remember for the life of me what his name is or the name of the thread. Anywho that's just my 2/100 of a dollar and MHO, take it as you will, and stay safe and legal @.@b

Thanks for the links, they've been dutifully saved.

Question. Is the onus on the "barrel" having left the factory or remanufacturing factory at a length shorter than 18", or is is it the shotty itself having left aforementioned factory. Reason I ask is that if it's the barrel, then a simple barrel swap on my Grizzly 18"with a remanned 15" barrel takes care of my particular issue AND the OAL remains at 26+" even with my folder.

CFC has been revoking registrations on 870's with 15" barrels There was a large thread about it a wile back , Owners had to turn in the 15" barrels because they were not factory made .

That was for those specific particular firearms if I am correct. Barrels from the Grizzly and Dlask are still okay because they were manufactured at that length. The barrels that were being recalled were cut to 16" somewhere down the line by an idiot were they not?

I think you are still okay with a Grizzly or Dlask barrel.

The idiot according to the CFC was the Police.....It seems to me that if the Police legally cut the barrels to 16 inches and then legaly sold them to the private market that these barrels should be considered legal due to the fact they were not manufactured illegaly!

Back on topic, it's not a bad idea to stay a bit longer then the min. length allowed by law in case you need to tune up the end after the cut or if it get's damaged somehow..

Those were only specific police surplus shotguns that we illegally altered by the police.

They are not revoking registrations, they are getting the owners to return the illegal barrels.

Hi are there any provisions, that alloe a semi auto shotgun,to have more than 5 shots,I can,t find it any where,or I am looking in the wrong place.

If you want to get really technical, Yes. However the guns and parts to do so do not exist. Has to do with the way the laws on magazine capacity works.

He was talking about putting a remanned 15" barrel on a griz . If the barrel wasn't manufactured as a 15" it is now prohibited . I would assume by his use of REMANNED he means a barrel that was altered to 15" & that = Prohibited . Factory made not prohib.
