Durring a BBQ last night at my home I had a family of 4 skunks come and visit my back yard. We quickly all moved inside so we didnt turn the party into a real stinker :D

Anyhow.. A buddy of mine was saying that if i had subsonics we would be able to shoot them in the back yard and not make a noticable noise... Now let me clear something first. I am not about to shoot my 22 in the middle of a city. I wouldnt want to run the risk of having cops come by with guns drawn... BUT.... We made a little wager over it... I am going to go pick up a box of the subsonics and bring them up to our hunting trip this year... If I can honestly tell him that the noise wouldnt be heard then I lose the bet and i have to pay for the booze bill for the trip.....

so my questions for you guys is... should i bring a couple extra brown ones for the hunting trip.. how loud are they really?

I know its open to interpretation but then again its just a silly little bet between 2 buds..

remington sub sonic's are not much quieter then any other brand of ammo i have put thru my cooey, if its quiet you want then you will need to get CB's.

It depends - do you want to "rig" the test?

:)

If you use CB's in short-barelled firearms, with noise-inducing backstops, you may just spare yourself a bill...

If you fire a subsonic .22 in the city your next door neighbors will hear it, you might get away with one shot but any more will have them looking and reporting something is happening. Subsonic rounds for a .22 are just a few hundred feet per second slower than regular .22 ammo, so they don't make the sonic crack of breaking the sound barrier, but there is still the bang of the cartridge going off. BB caps made by CCI are still able to be heard, their sound is like a loud clap or the sound of a fairly powerful air rifle. BB CAPS in a pistol are louder than from a rifle, the longer the barrel with BB caps the quieter they get. For working through an action and being reasonably quiet CCI LONG BB CAPS are the best, but they won't function a semi-auto.

My brother in law shot some CB Longs out of a fairly long barreled rifle (old Mossberg maybe) and all you could hear from about 6 feet behind him was the hammer fall. Definitely no louder than an air rifle.

With CB longs out of my long barrled Marlin 81, I don't need hearing protection at the range. The same ammo out of my 6" M17 revolver is loud enough that I need hearing protection.

I have heard that a .22 rifle with CB longs fired through a barely opened window (say 2") with the rifle positioned as far back into the room as possible, will dispatch vermin without disturbing the neighbors. This was told to me by an old trapper, never tried it myself and don't suggest that anyone else try it either.

Yep. That would work. Basically the room is working like a big silencer.
I live somewhat in the country though. So I plink with my pellet gun freely, and with my CB longs as well. They're about the same for noise level.

i have rem thunderbolt subsonic. up close shootin at 10 feet into a snobank all i head was the bolt cycle on my 10/22 at farther ranges it was more noticable.

You can use cb longs out of a rifle in the city. Nobody will hear ####. Sounds like an airgun.

Be advised it is illegal though...

I have happily used subsonics to hunt rabbits in close birch forests in the winter where EVERY noise seems painfully loud because of the echo. The subsonics help. But they are still loud. I wouldnt pop any rounds off in a city.

CB shorts from my Marlin 39A 24" bbl are pretty quiet. I hear the hammer fall and the bullet hit the target. Definitely on par with an air rifle.

I don't know the velocity of CB Longs, but they're darn quiet. Shooting them out of a bolt action rifle, the firing pin hitting the rim of the cartridge is louder than the shot report.
