how silent are subsonics?

I shot a brick of Remington CBs (700 fps) just playing around. You could shoot those in town and get away with it, the hammer dropping was about all I could hear with my BL22.
I had the opportunity to shoot a Steenbuck with a silenced Martini actioned .22 using Remington Sub-Sonic hollowpoints last month. I heard the striker drop and the richocett sound of the pass-through chest hit, and the steenbuck wandered a short distance and died.

I shot a few groundhogs with CB shorts at close range. old single shot cooey with a long barrelall you could hear was the bolt strike and a thunk at the other end...

My experience exactly with an old cooey model 75. Probably quieter than an air rifle.

I have happily used subsonics to hunt rabbits in close birch forests in the winter where EVERY noise seems painfully loud because of the echo. The subsonics help. But they are still loud. I wouldnt pop any rounds off in a city.
I like the use of the subliminals.:D

Good video too.

Firing them from my Rem 512 boltie, the CB's are quieter than my spring-action .177 pellet-rifle. I do think that the gaps in a revolver (as well as the shorter barrel) contribute to it making a louder noise...

I fired them from my Cooey 82 and could hear the striker OVER them. They were super quiet. However, out of my shorter M-16R semi, they were almost as loud as regular 22's

CB Longs are super quiet in my Marlin 7000, though you have to manually cycle the action. They are quiet enough to be used in an urban environment (IE, remove that damn marmot under the shed)

I find no difference in sound between my Marlin and my Cooey #39.

Back to the original question: If you want to tilt the odds to your favour (ie: LOUDER), just shoot them out of a short barreled rifle, especially a semi (10/22 compact would be good) The subsonsics will sound as loud as a regular .22
If you want to buy his booze (ie: Make it QUIETER), shoot the subsonics out of a fixed action (bolt/break/pump/lever) with a looooong barrel. As quiet as a BB gun.

If you REALLY want to have some fun. Pick uop a box of remington subsonics, and a box of high velocity...and switch box covers ;)

Hey guys
If you want really quiet you should try the brazillian brand of .22's.Aquillia I think is the name, Their just filled with primer (Aprox 500 fps) good enough for pests. It will go through 1/4 inch plywood. You hear the hammer fall a that's it no bang nothin. It will not cycle semi's,Not enough pop.Tried half a box and all the same nothing at all.:dancingbanana:

I usually use Win Xpert Hp rounds in my gun. Very loud snap and will go through 3 2x4s no problem lodging in the 4th in the surface. I put many coons to sleep with these this year. I tried the CB longs and noticed how much more quiet they were compared to the others and decided to try them the other day at a little bugger who was making a mess of my garbage. Scared it up a tree and placed one right between the peepers at 4-5 yards. He fell (like usual) right into the bushes. I go inside to get a bag to put it in and come out and it's gone!!!:eek: WTF? A little blood but no trail. I looked for that thing for 2 hrs and never found it.

Please dont use these rounds on anything bigger than a bird. I felt really bad after that happened.

I'll keep those for ringing doorbells from across the street and changing the channel when i can't find my remote:D

Simple answer here: You missed.
I have taken 37 raccoons and just as many skunks with CB's in the last 5 years....I have yet to have one run away from a well placed headshot.

The 29 grainers at 700 FPS carry more than enough energy/penetration for a raccoon skull. Don't blame the ammo for that coon runing away...look in the mirror. I would have at least re-chambered and went right away to see if it was dead rather than *assuming* it was dead. The animal probably suffered...but it wasn't the ammo that caused it.
YMMV

Did you just say win xperts can penetrate 3 pieces of 2x4 stacked together?
