I've been so good with cleaning my SKS after shooting corrosive until of course, the one time I shoot in the rain. Gun got soaked yesterday and when I got home, I had to fix my girlfriend's car so I didn't have time to clean it. Completely forgot about it until now and lo and behold, the bolt is all rusty and it looks like there's rust in the firing pin channel. The firing pin won't rattle freely now and I can see rust in the channel.

I tried like hell to punch that pin out but it just won't budge...is there a trick to it? Is there any other way I can get rid of the rust inside the bolt?

It should come out rather easy unless its rusted up also. As mentioned it only comes out one way. I use a piece of hardwood that I drilled a hole into, then place the bolt body over the hole inline with the pin, use a punch and a hammer, and tap it out.

Don't forget to check out your gas cylinder tube, its likely rusted up also.

Yeah, I've managed to get all the rust off everything else...its just the firing pin.

I know it only comes out one way but no matter how hard I hit it, it won't budge...

Am I imagining thing or does the pin have to be punched out in a certain direction. IIRC than one side is larger than the other, so you have to punch it out from the smaller side.

Pretty sure that's what my SKS bolt is like.

It's obvious. One side is about 3mm diameter, the other side has a big flange on it ;) Obviously, you remove it by beating on the smaller side. Use a proper punch and a small hammer, repeated forceful strikes until it's out.

I had to wail on mine several times to get it going. But in the end it finally came out. I think the hardest part was trying to keep the bolt from tilting and jumping from the impact, and smashing and denting the bolt.

X2

I just put a rag in the vise around the jaws and left extra material of the rag in the center. The rag on the vise jaws kept the bolt from getting scared and the extra material in the center caught the pin as it fell.

It did take a few good blows, but was not that bad to remove.

Pay attention to the "proper punch" part mentioned above. Use a suitably sized pin punch not some tapered center punch or nail set. Or you may wedge the punch in the hole as the pin drives out.

OK I got it out! I guess I was just wasn't hitting it hard enough

Now my problem is how do I get all the rust out of the channel? I can get a .22 brass brush in about halfway but how do I get all the way to the front?

Any ideas? Is there some kind of liquid that magically dissolves rust?

Yes there is, and you can buy it a Crappy tire, I just cannot remember the name of it LOL. I am pretty sure I remember someone saying there was a product at Crappy tire that could eat the rust, hopefully someone will key in with the answer and hopefully it was not just me dreaming it.
