Top is the existing ejector for a Beretta CX4 carbine

Below is the new ejector and the spring.

That lottle canoe paddle handle looking thing on the end of the ejector doesn't come off, it's all one piece. I wonder if in the factory they force the spring onto the ejector then peen over the end or something? Because all I can think of to install the spring is force it over the canoe handle and wind it on, which will take a long time and be annoying as hell.

Any ideas?

Lube!
:)

Winding shouldn't take too long.... you could rig something up with a cordless but that would likely take longer.

That won't take long at all!!! I clean all my wound springs by wrapping a coil in a wet patch and turning it all the way from one end to the other. It's the only way you can reliably get all the years of gunk off of every bit of them. Try it, you'll be surprised at how fast you can do it. I bet it took way longer to write this post than it will to wind that on there!

Winding the first part on will be easy, but compressing the end part will not be. Anybody have a good trick to it?

Put it in a vise and every now and then, when it gets hard to wind, pull down on some of the coils with a flat head screwdriver to take the pressure off. A spanner head screw driver is perfect for this type of spring compression if you have one that is the correct size! You could always make one with an appropriately sized flat head screw driver, although it isn't very long and doesn't look like it's under a terrible amount of pressure, so just using a flat head to take the pressure off should do it when that part is clamped vertically in a vise.

I bet you get further then you'd think, if you can't take up the tension with your off hand, smitsauce has the right idea.... some sort of improvised tool to help take the tension off. The flats and a vice should help you avoid stabbing yourself!

Try bare hands first.... and update us as to how far you get.... :)

One more thought, I'd pinch the spring wearing some rubber grip work gloves, or maybe a leather strap or thong wrapped around it like a strap style oil filter wrench..... and then do the turning from the large flat end.

Just a thought but could you wrap the shaft in a bunch of turns of the heaviest fishing line you have, start the spring over the head of the ejector and then un thread the string all the way off pulling the spring onto the ejector. Would be the easiest way to get the last part over the nub.

I can't even get the damn thing started without damaging the spring! Laugh2

I'll try again when I am not annoyed with having to deal with tiny parts that need fiddling around with...... which are the bane of my existence! :)

Might be a job for some lady fingers.... :)

I would think you could open the coil up a bit and get it past one side of the T and then get it to go around the other with the first twist?

Sort of like getting keys on and off a key ring.

Make a cross with the spring and the paddle and push it together, then wrap it around until you come to the end, then wrap it around to the other end.

This is the way. Although getting the last few coils on was a bit painful, this technique worked well and did not damage the spring.

Thanks anchor, I knew there had to be someone with a good trick to get the spring on and this is just the sort of advice I needed!

Thanks to everybody who made suggestions!

Would you please take it apart and do a video so we can all see what he means:)

I will get right on that! :)

Gun still isn't ejecting, despite new ejector and spring, extractor and recoil spring...So far all that frustration for nothing.

I guess it's time to start swapping parts with other guns to determine where the problem is. :runaway:

Edit - aww - I misread that maybe. You changed the extractor spring but not the extractor - maybe - so I’ll add this : My Px4 extractor looked fine, but a new one fixed a problem similar to yours.

Pull the bolt back until it stops and feel if it feels free right to the hard stop - and watch to see that the ejector is now where it should be relative to the bolt face.

It might be crud building up in the action. I would get some paper towels and some WD and wash things out without taking anything apart and try the bolt a few more times and see if it frees up a little. You've likely already been running empties or dummies through - you can likely test it again without shooting. Clean the chamber nicely before shooting - but a bit of WD in the action during the first shots won't hurt - take an extra pair of clean glasses. : )

To Elimsprint - Take a pen refill and the spring from the pen and make an x and press them together, then wrap the spring coil by coil around the refill working first to one end and then to the other - and like Gate says, it'll get a little difficult at the ends.
