For a shotgun barrel, what is too thin?
I have heard that it should measure .02" at the muzzle.
This seems way too thin. Is it right?
Also, How thick should the chamber wall be?
NEED HELP! :runaway:

.020 is about as thin as I would like to go. Barrels can be thinner but they are extremely delicate. I have a English double that has thin barrels. It is in proof, the bore is exactly the diameter it shoud be. The barrels at their thinnest points are .015 and .017 inches thick ( thin?). I am careful about what I shoot out of it and how I handle it.

Why would manufactures make a muzzle so thin (.02) ?
I mean, is there an actual purpose to such a light
wall thickness. Weight savings maybe, but really,
how much weight are you actually conserving ?

The English proof houses have never published standards for barrel wall thickness, although they certainly have working standards. all new barrels chambersd for 2 1/2 have a minimum wall thickness of.028. Barrels chambered for 2 3/4 .032 is the minimun. Guns submitted for reproof have to show a thickness of at least .024 .Anvil i think your gun is out of proof.

The gun is ~100 years old and passed proof at the time. Standards may have changed, but in or out of proof the gun is a fine shooter:)

So how exactly do you measure a barrel's thickness say in the middle of the barrel? Or are they just measured at the chamber and muzzle?

Striker, you do it with specialized tools. Brownells sels them. A selection of bore diameter tools is here:

and a wall thickness gauge is here:

Pull out your plastic.

210, fascinating info re: minimum wall thicknesses at the English proof houses. Could you provide a source for the data please? An approximate date for the implementation of these rules?
