How to attach a sling?

Hello,

I have a Thompson Hawken .50 cal with octagonal barrel.

It appears you need a special "thimble" with stud to attach a sling swivel
ht tps://www.muzzle-loaders.com/accessories/parts/thompson-center-swivels-brass-thimbles.html

Anyone in Canada sell these thimbles?
Or what other methods do you know of?

Uncle Mikes makes them, you should be able too get them at Cabellas or BassPro

Don't know where you might find the thimble in Canada. Not sure I would trust that arrangement. Thimble screws aren't made to take a load.
The QD couplers can be had almost anywhere, Cabela's, BP, CT, etc.

I have a sling that has nothing but two fabric choker loops on either end that I use for my Hawken. I think it's actually a shotgun sling but it works for me.

Poke around trackofthewolf.com . You will probably find something to your liking, then search for an equivalent on amazon.ca.

P.S. Don't get the one with the foam rubber stretchy shoulder pad. That may be ok for a shotgun but it is a bit of a PITA with a rifle.

I botched the link to avoid linking in to another forum.

Take a good look at this knot and see if it suits your needs.

I used it on a sword scabbard I made a few years back, instead of leaving a length of strap loose, I stiched a ring in to the end of the leather strap and adjusted the lay of the whole knot so the ring was up tight to the wrap.

I think it would make a decent enough knot to use to attach a sling around the barrel, without being either too high to see the sights over, or altering your rifle in any damaging way.

Just throwing an idea for you to consider.

They used to make a sling kit that included a piece that laced tightly around the butt plate and stock for about 4 inches, with the sling permanently stitched to it. The sling was pretty thin leather and had a loop stitched at the other end. It was retained by threading the ramrod through it between the thimbles. There was just enough space between the ramrod and barrel rib to allow it.

Although the original was, I think, an Uncle Mike's product made of thin suede leather, you could make one up out of heaver leather, with a brass DEE ring stitched to the butt stock portion, and a tough thin piece of shoe leather for the ramrod loop, also with a brass ring slipped through a grommet fastening the loop together. The sling could then be fastened to the rings with small straps and buckles or flat spring type snap hooks. (like the one used on an SKS.)
