How to build an AR for under $1000

He made his own barrel?

Wow... talk about FALSE ADVERTISING.

This thread got my hopes up...

I only put $100 price tag on the barrel because I machined it myself. There are quite a few other areas you could cut off a few bucks to make up the extra hundred or two to buy a used/new barrel. Just watch the EE like a hawk. The good ones go fast!!!

Oh ya.........and we are looking to put them out the door sub$400. Jamie is going to put the 10.25" through it's paces at the One Shot Tactical match so hopefully a full report will follow. I am exploring the option of using Canadian made blanks and having the barrel extensions made in Canada as well. The only piece of US steel that will touch the barrel will be the reamer if everything works out.

On what?

Making barrels? Probably about a year since my deployment will be 11.5 months!!! As long as the CFO doesn't give me too much grief as far as manufacturer licensing goes the first ones will be ready to go out the door VERY shortly after I get back in August.

We plan on putting together some uppers for retail next year. I want to build a few more and make sure that I have all of the tweaking down to be sure they are going to be reliable. We got lucky with the gas system on the shorty. We are going to build a few more to the same specs and make sure it wasn't all luck!!!

Mikes:

My appologies if my inquiry was unclear.

However you did start this post, on your success on building what you considered quality upper, at a bargain price. You did go on to state that you hoped to be able to offer same to the Canadian shooting public at large. You seem to have a working prototype, and I was wondering if this would acutally come to fruition or was to be another "ArmedSask" type of post.

I think we can all agree that in the shooting sprots "affordable Canadian Made alternative" are desirable, and need to be supported. However I for one am quite tired of "It slices, dices and is a Canadian made Ginsu" type post that turn out to fizzel and die with much excitement about nothing.

May Good fortune shine on you and mates durring your tour, be safe and come back to us in one piece.

Regards

AbH

We have a working prototype, not that it is anything special, just a normal AR barrel. But it shoots very, very well and I really want to be able to produce these commercially. I was unaware when I started this project that you need a manufacturing license to be able to sell them retail. So, given the timeframe of my tour and the fact that I have just now started the application process for a license, don't expect anything before the end of next summer. I will do all of the groundwork in the meantime so we can hit the ground running when I get back.

As for the price, if I can't do it for a good price, I won't do it at all. I am all about bringing you guys things that are affordable and quality.

Mike:

Agreed.

I wish you good fortune, and look forward to results and doing business.
