When you are forced to buy your rings by mail is there a rule of thumb to use.
For example if I am fitting a 3x9x40mm will med height rings work or should I order high. When is low OK etc
No gun shops within 6 hours of me to check first hand.

Look at the Brownells website and order a Brownells catalog.

They include the height of each ring set in the respective product details.

P.S.: Rings are exempt from ITAR export restrictions.

And highly informative post on the topic can be found here: http://www.opticstalk.com/how-to-determine-proper-ring-height_topic5946.html

I didn't read the above-mentioned article, but I'll tell you how I do it. Take some putty or other malleable material and smush it onto the receiver. Bed your scope into the material to the proper height, remove the scope and the material from the receiver and finally measure the thickness of the material.

I believe the math goes something like this...

- scope objective diameter, subtract the scope tube diameter (usually 1" or 30mm),
- divide this number by 2 = your absolute min height

Now take your base height and subtract that from your min height and you have the min ring height (measured from the bottom of the ring to the bottom of the tube of the ring)

It would go something like this...
2" scope objective diameter, subtract the 1" scope tube,
divided by 2 would equal .5" min height required

Say your base is .2 inches high (this would also include any barrel/receiver height difference) so you need at least .3" of a height ring to clear the barrel

Sounds a little confusing but real easy once you do it.

There are many differences in ring height from make to make so you need to check the internet to see what they list as ring height. Scope objective diameter can be found on the internet as well.
